Actress Gabrielle Union and NBA Hall of Famer Dwayne Wade’s relationship has been a messy one. The duo first got together in 2010, when Dwayne Wade was coming out of a long-drawn custody battle with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. Since then, they have faced several challenges, mostly related to their children.
“The woman I am today would not have stayed” says Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union, in her memoir We’re Going to Need More Wine, talks about how back in 2014 when she and Dwayne Wade had just got back together after breaking up a year earlier, Wade had revealed that he was having a child with another woman. This other woman was actress Aja Metoyer, and Wade had got together with her while he and Union had been apart. Pertaining to the fact that Union had had several miscarriages, this came as a shock to her and turned her world upside down. But slowly, she forgave Wade, and they came out stronger than they were before.
Recently in an interview with essence.com, Union explained why the woman she is today wouldn’t have stayed with Wade. “It’s the truth. Who I am, the healing that I have fought for, the peace that I have fought for, I wouldn’t have” said Union.

She has been subject to a plethora of miscarriages and also has struggled with mental health issues. Coming out strong through all of this is not easy, but she has managed to do so. She has indeed fought to be the woman that she is today, and she should not be condemned for wanting to leave Wade in the difficult situation that they were in back in 2014.
In 2019, Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union welcomed Kaavia James Union Wade, their own child born via surrogate. After their long history of struggles, the couple deserved such a blessing. They are loving and supportive parents, not only to Kaavia but to their other children too. Wade was not hesitant in showing when his daughter Zaya came out as transgender. All this shows that the closely-knit family that they are, and even though Union questions her past actions, she is hopeful for her future with Wade.
