“It’s Unacceptable”: Enes Kanter urges to boycott 2022 Olympics to end China’s ‘dictatorship’

Athletes of the world have an enormous platform that could be used a medium to help inspire the minds of fans and other people. Enes Kanter, center of the Boston Celtics has utilized his position as an athlete to create awareness on various socio-political issues that according to him, many of his own peers have not had the courage to address.

The NBA star has been very vocal about the Chinese Communists and their practices as a ruling force. He has been actively fighting for justice towards Chinese locals who are being forced into labour and abused by their governments. Kanter has received a lot of backlash from the Chinese authorities as well as death threats.

As an act of protest following the recent allegations made by Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai against former China vice premier Zhang Gaoli for sexual assault, Kanter took to twitter addressing the accusations asking the International Olympic Committee to move the Olympics from China that is set to take place early next year.

“As athletes concerned about human rights and justice, we must pressure the IOC to move games,” said Kanter in a Wall Street Journal Op-ed. “All gold medal in the world aren’t worth selling your values and your principles to the Chinese Communist Party,” he added referring to the athletes around the world.

Both players went head to head recently as both teams were faced up against each other. Neither of the players had any sort of conversation or altercation but Kanter certainly used other means to convey his piece of mind.

LeBron responded during the post-game press conference saying…

“He’s always had a word or two to say in my direction, and as a man. If you’ve got an issue with somebody, you really come up to him. He has his opportunity tonight. I seen him in the hallway, and he walked right by me.”

The four time champ has been a supporter of human right and welfare, but he still has not made any comment on the issues raised by Kanter.

The Peng Shuai situation in China raises suspicions

Since the allegations, the tennis player has disappeared from the eyes of the media. The star had asked the Women’s Tennis Association not to release information without her knowledge saying that she is resting at home and everything is fine. Steve Simon CEO of the WTA claimed that he tried reaching out to her but has not been able to get through.

“I have a hard time believing that Peng Shuai actually wrote the email we received or believes what is being attributed to her,” he said. He further said that Shuai must be allowed to speak freely without any coercion in respect of the concerns raised by her.
