Utah Jazz had two representatives in the 2022 All-Star Game, one being a former Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. The other being Donovan Mitchell, whose elite scoring consistency has got him among the top ranks of modern-day players in the league. However, after being selected into Team LeBron ahead of Sunday’s epic star-studded showdown, it seems like the 25-years-old star will not be able to step up on the mega stage.
This announcement by Donovan Mitchell has come as a shock to many as he revealed he would not be able to play due to his upper respiratory illness. Being selected for the third consecutive year as a reserve, Mitchell was all set to line-up alongside stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Chris Paul, Nikola Jokic among other stars as well.
Donovan Mitchell to miss Sunday’s All-Star Game showdown
This season, Donovan Mitchell is averaging 25.7 points, 5.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and a career-high 1.6 steals per game while shooting a career-high 45.6 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from 3-point land.
Although it is a bummer not to see one of the league’s most entertaining young stars play, his health is paramount for the Utah Jazz’s success. They have the most efficient offense in the league by a significant margin and are in fourth place in the Western Conference. As the team’s only 20-point scorer and one of their best playmakers, Mitchell is extremely important to the team.
That being said, Utah Jazz are currently in a tough spot for the playoff after their recent downfall in form. Having to compete against the likes of Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets to seal a playoff berth, Mitchell is vitally important. Especially with Joe Ingles being sent away, Jazz cannot definitely lose another big-time scorer.
Now, with Donovan Mitchell out of All-Star 2022 Game, it remains to be seen who will be his last-minute replacement on Team LeBron. Furthermore, will the star be justified of his place in such a manner? Well, all speculations will be answered as the showdown is set to begin in less than an hour.
