Kevin Durant clapped right back at a fan for telling the former what to do, in a game that he has been playing for years, and talking as if he owns him. The occurrence of NBA fans troubling the players has increased significantly in the past few years and now, the players have started to give harsh replies, which has been a result of bottling up emotions they weren’t allowed to express.

Such suppression of voices of the players by the NBA through fines and bans has led to an outrage amongst the players from different teams, who now come together to support each other when any such incident happens, and this time, it was Draymond Green supporting Durant, for what he did.

Draymond Green came out in support of Kevin Durant after the latter gave a harsh and straightforward reply to a fan who was telling him what to do when the game was still on. Kevin didn’t hold back his words and said certain things which attracted a fine from the NBA. The process of fines has been going on forever, but it was always not the same. Referees and the league have now become overtly sensitive to such legitimate reactions of players who have done nothing wrong and are just expressing themselves through their words, unlike a couple of decades ago when players could at least express themselves properly in game or in between timeouts.

This over sensitisation of such issues is wrong and has attracted stringent criticism from the players in the league and fans all around the world.

He stated that the empowerment of such fans through the fines implemented by the NBA was wrong, and should stop. Let us take a closer look at what happened in this sequence and what Green said in order to support Durant.

Kevin Durant just like every other player in the league has had enough of the crap coming from the fans sitting courtside or anywhere in the arena, who have the audacity to say things or do things which are definitely not welcomed in the spectrum of sports. Be it fans throwing things at the players, showing the middle finger, saying things or signaling offensive things, the NBA doesn’t seem to be taking those offences as seriously as the players having legitimate reactions to those actions.

Kevin Durant was fined after the Brooklyn Nets’ game against the Portland Trailblazers, which the former won by a 5-point margin. Durant while in play was pissed off at a peculiar statement made by a fan, where the latter was trying to tell Durant what he should be doing and the tone of voice seemed a bit off. It was a situation which Sounded more like a demand than encouragement. Imagine a random person coming to your job telling you what you need to do? That is something that Durant must’ve felt at that moment. The fans said, “Kevin you gotta take this game over”, to which Durant replied, “You gotta shut the f**k up and sit down”.

Following this incident, Kevin Durant was fined for using words which were a clear expression of his feelings, Draymond Green came out in his support, and stated that the NBA needs to stop encouraging such behaviour from the fines by implementing fines from the players. Such fines were empowering the people who have no good intentions and do and say things to players as if they own them. Green said, “Keep talking yo s**t, one day they’ll stop empowering fans to talk to us as if we are their children”

Not only has Durant faced such issues, but in the past, many players have had to give fines for their genuine reactions after bottling up emotions for a long span of time, and at some point, it has to come out. If players need to learn to control their legitimate emotions, then even the fans need to understand that they don’t own the players, and they need to learn how to handle their behaviours and understand boundaries.
