Kevin Durant

After the Brooklyn Nets briefly slipped from the top spots in the Eastern Conference to the play-in tournament berths, courtesy to their more-than-10-game losing streak, many thought Kevin Durant’s absence has haunted the team. With Kyrie Irving being a part-time player, James Harden quitting on the team, Durant has managed to lead his team into the postseason against all odds.

Having gathered enough momentum to be considered as one of the favorites to contest in the conference finals, Kevin Durant’s Nets have finally secured their playoff ticket after beating resilient Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night. Now with Durant displaying his GOAT caliber, it seems like Irving too has joined the party in order to avenge their painful exit from the playoffs, last season.

NBA Reddit has duly noted this statistical anomaly – something very rare even for the greatest NBA superstars. Kevin Durant has only been on 1 team to miss the playoffs after his sophomore year. He averaged 27.2 points per game in the 2008-09 NBA season. His first scoring title came right during his rookie scale contract, in just his 3rd year.

Since that 2009-10 season, when the Oklahoma City Thunder got knocked out by the Lakers in the first round, Kevin Durant has not personally missed a single playoff year. When OKC Thunder subsequently missed the playoffs back in 2014-15, it was mainly because of his absence.

The Nets have strengthened their roster by heaps, Seth Curry, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on the offensive end, the team will eagerly be waiting for Ben Simmons to step onto the court for the Barclays Center team. Will Durant’s long-wait to lift another championship finally come over, with his teammates looking in best shape to support him? Remains to be seen as the 2021-22 postseason festivity continues.
