“You don’t wanna see us next year”, These were Stephen Curry’s words on May 21st, 2021 after a disappointing loss to the Grizzlies in the Play-In Tournament. About 11 months down the line, the Warriors have stepped up and claimed what is theirs, their opponents have bowed down, and the haters are nowhere to be seen, as the Golden State Warriors clinch their 4th NBA Title in 8 seasons.

Stephen Curry has dismembered his critics, obliterated every hurdle on his way and has led the path for Golden State to rise from its ashes to the their rightful throne. The Golden State Warriors are NBA champions after coming away with a 103-90 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the NBA Finals at TD Garden on last Thursday night. Let’s have a look at some staggering records Curry broke, on course to the summit of NBA.

Shooting over double-teams from the logo, crossing people over and shooting beyond half court, step backs under pressure, runners off one leg from 35 feet, simply the greatest display of shooting we’ve ever seen! In the end, Curry, once again, led the way for Golden State on the offensive end. He finished the series-clinching win with a team-high 34 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, adding yet another chapter to his already legendary career.

The rest of the Warriors offered Curry plenty of help as Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson all scored in double figures as well. On the other end, the Celtics were led by Jaylen Brown, who did all he could with 34 points, seven rebounds and three assists, but unfortunately for Boston fans, it wasn’t enough to extend their season one more game.

5 Stellar records to Stephen Curry’s name after his triumph over Boston in 2022 NBA Finals

There was a lot of speculation about where Stephen Curry and Golden State will be at the end of this NBA season, after suffering their worst couple of years in recent history. People keep forgetting the lesson that ‘Warriors’ is their name, a part of who they are, they don’t give up.

The horrific end to the 2019 NBA Finals, which saw Klay suffering a torn ACL, coupled with 2 of their worst seasons in recent history, some people were assuming the dynasty had died, well, seems like it won’t so soon. After having gone through so much, Golden State have reinstated their position back among the elite, with Stephen Curry as their ‘Achilles’ .

Here are five numbers you need to know from the Finals MVP, the one and only, Stephen Wardell Curry.

1.First player to average 30-5-5 in multiple Finals

If any defense in the league was celebrating Stephen Curry being past his prime, you will be in drowned by his 3’s, as the 2-time MVP is showing no signs of stopping. Stephen Curry became just the fourth player in NBA history to average at least 30.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in multiple NBA Finals, joining Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Jerry West.

In a heartbreaking Finals against Toronto in 2019, Curry averaged 30.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists as the Warriors were defeated by Kawhi and company. 3 years later, Curry hit those marks again as he averaged 31.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in Golden State’s six-game series win over the Celtics.

2.Scoring Machine for the Warriors

Stephen Curry is a World renowned Chef who plays basketball as a hobby, and is really good at it too. Apparently a Boston restaurant taunted his wife, Ayesha Curry’s cooking, as they hung a board on which were the words, “Ayesha Curry can’t cook”. Curry took this personally and cooked the Boston a ‘Chef Special’, roasting Boston throughout the series with his sniper efficiency. Stephen Curry led all players in scoring with 187 total points over the six-game series as he accounted for 29.7% of Golden State’s 629 points scored in the Finals. To add some context to Curry’s level of production, Andrew Wiggins was the next Warrior on the list with 17.5%.

Curry was also responsible for 41.3% of their 3-pointers made, also recording the best ever true shooting percentage of 62.6% in the Finals by a guard, ever. But as we’ve learned throughout this Warriors’ dynasty, Curry’s impact on Golden State’s offense goes well beyond the points he scores himself. His mere gravitas on the hardwood provides so much attention from the opposing defense that it makes the game easier for his teammates, providing extra space and higher-percentage scoring opportunities.

3. Top notch 3-point display

Apparently there was a ‘deadly assassin’ on the lose at the TD Garden by the name of Stephen Curry, amid the much awaited battle between the Champions of The East and West, as the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ took multiple victims in his ‘shootout’ against the Celtics, en-route to his maiden NBA Finals MVP. Curry entered the 2022 NBA Finals holding the record for the most 3-pointers made in Finals history, with 121 in 28 games on the championship stage.

With these additional six games, he added another 31 to that total, extending his record to 152. Teammate Klay Thompson with 105 and rival LeBron James with 101 are the only other players in Finals history with at least 100 3-pointers made. Curry’s haul of 31 3-pointers marked the most in a six-game series in NBA Finals; he broke his own record (25) from Golden State’s 2015 title run, the first of this dynasty. Jayson Tatum and Klay Thompson tied for the second-most 3-pointers in the 2022 Finals with 20 apiece.

4.Pull-up shooting

Stephen Curry has been called many things, from ‘Baby-faced Assassin’ to ‘3-point God’, but the Finals MVP is something that had eluded him for the past decade. What separates Curry from the other great shooters in NBA history is his ability to knock down 3-point shots on the move as well as stationary off the catch. Curry’s pull-up prowess was on full display during the 2022 NBA Finals as he led all players with 36 such buckets, including 23 3-pointers. During the first three rounds of the playoffs prior to the Finals, Curry shot 40.4% from the field and from 3-point range for an effective field goal percentage of 53.7% on pull-ups.

5.King of Screens and Fakes

One of the key matchups to watch entering the 2022 NBA Finals was Curry against Marcus Smart, who had just been named the league’s Kia Defensive Player of the Year. When we look at Curry’s offensive matchup data from the series, we see that Smart defended Curry for a team-high 27:50 and did a solid job at slowing Curry down. Smart held Curry to 25 points on 34.8% shooting from the field, including 25.0% from 3-point range, with as many turnovers (six) as assists.

Below is a game-by-game breakdown of the number of screens the Warriors set for Curry and the points per possessions the Warriors scored on those possessions. In total, the Warriors set 159 screens for Curry over the six-game series, and scored nearly 1.5 points per possession.

Steph Curry made a 3-pointer for the first basket of the game, which started a historic first quarter in which he made six 3s and scored 21 points. The six 3s were an NBA Finals record for the most ever made in a single quarter by one player, and the 21 points were the most a player has had in a Finals quarter since Michael Jordan in 1993.

Warriors were plagued with several injuries, as they suffered for 2 years, being mocked and trolled for being a shadow of their former selves. People keep forgetting the lesson that ‘Warriors’ is their name, a part of who they are, they don’t give up. They forget who scary a healthy Warriors team can be, there is a reason that it’s called a ‘Warriors Dynasty’.
