5 NBA Players that trumped Michael Jordan in statistics
Michael Jordan
There is no denying the greatness of Michael Jordan, regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, he led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles and was the league MVP on 5 different occasions. While MJ had a very refined skill-set which made him lethal in all aspects of the game, it certainly does not mean that he was the best in them. With the NBA displaying the talents of numerous players, there are some that are bound to be better than the GOAT. In this list, let us take a look at five such players.
5. Wilt Chamberlain
Wilt Chamberlain is one of the most historical and important players that ever played in the NBA, Wilt possesses the one record that seems to be unbreakable: 100 points in a game. While Wilt was a great player there is one particular statistics that Michael Jordan cannot hold a candle to, that is Rebounds.
Wilt was a great scorer on the court but an aspect that he dominated was as a rebounder. Standing at 7ft 1 inch tall, Chamberlain holds the record for most rebounds in a game with a whopping 55! When compared to Jordan’s 18 rebounds in a 1997 game, which still is an incredible feat just shows how much Chamberlain dominated his era as his total rebounds comes up to 23,924.
4. Shaquille O’ Neal
One of the most dominant big man to ever play the game. The 4x NBA champion and 15x All Star was a monster in the paint, Shaq was known for his contempt for backboards destroying so many that the league had to change rules just because of him. Considered the best center to ever play, The Diesel excelled inside the line both defensively and offensively.
Jordan was also known for his defensive ability. In 1988, he was the defensive player of the year. Though there is no questioning of his defense as mentioned, Shaq was a different beast defensively, has he blocked many of the shots coming his way. While Jordan has a total of 893 blocks in his career still very impressive for someone who played as a guard. Shaq resides on the 8th all-time blocks list with a total of 2,732 blocks, no doubt making him one of the top-ranked blockers in NBA history.
3. Stephen Curry
There is no doubt that Stephen Curry has become one of the most influential players in basketball. Leading the warriors to 4 championships and still a long way to go as he enters his 14th season. By the time Stephen Curry retires, there will be more accolades in his name in the record books.
Curry, no doubt is the greatest shooter yet and argubaly the best ever, he has changed the way the game has played so much as during Jordan’s time in the 80s and 90s, 3pointers were important but were not attempted as often as it is today and while Jordan is not a bad shooter by any means, his highest in a game was 7 and his total career three-pointers made amounts to 581 which when laid side by side to Curry’s total three-pointers made at 3,117 just shows how much the league has evolved.
2. Karl Malone
Karl Malone is considered to be one of the best power forwards ever. Known for his consistent delivery he was nicknamed “The Mailman”. Malone and Jordan were fierce rivals in the late 90s with them meeting in the finals consecutively, though Malone and the Jazz could not close the deal both times leading to the Bulls winning the championships.
What Malone can boast over Michael Jordan though is that by the end of their careers, Karl Malone accumulated more points than the best to ever play the game. While MJ ranks 5th on the all-time scoring list with 32,292. Malone can be found two spots up with a total points of 36,928 points, a bragging right that MJ can do nothing about.
1. Lebron James
There is no one other than LeBron James that has come anywhere close to challenging the GOAT status of Michael Jordan. The two are constantly compared with each other over almost every aspect of the game. And while, Jordan reign has not faltered by any means, LeBron is catching up and even surpassing MJ in many categories.
But with all the stats that are being compared, one that is often brought up in disfavour of LeBron is the turnovers. LeBron not only has a much higher count of turnovers than Jordan but also the highest in NBA history. While Jordan has a total of 2924 turnovers in his career, LeBron almost doubles it with 4788 turnovers. This is one stat that Jordan is glad he does not have.
