Most NBA players who get drafted often get a lot of money from their first paycheck. Nowadays, NIL deals help college players earn a good amount of money even before they are eligible to be drafted. But NIL deals were only allowed by the NCAA starting from 2021. New York Knicks star player, Josh Hart wanted a free MacBook during his playing days with the Villanova Wildcats. He got himself one for free after exploiting a brilliant loophole.
Josh Hart played for the Villanova Wildcats from 2013-2017, winning the National Championship in 2016. During his time there, he had no NIL deals to bank upon. His desire for a MacBook was such that he decided to pick up the communications major program to receive a free one. He revealed to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post;
They gave Comm majors a free Macbook. And I wanted a Macbook. So I wanted to be a Comm major. That was really it. Nothing else. I did it for the Macbook.Josh Hart via New York Post
At least, Josh Hart is honest about his intentions. He received his free MacBook that year and that was his run with the communications program.
A year later when current Knicks teammate and former college running mate Jalen Brunson signed up for Communications Major, he did not receive the free MacBook. Villanova University had withdrawn the free MacBook offer for communications major students. Brunson, however, enrolled to major in Communications, which was his interest, not the MacBook.
Josh Hart has already earned more than $46 million to date. He has even signed a contract extension worth $81 million, which will trigger next season. At least he won’t need to join any free programs with that sort of money in the bank.
College education and two former Villanova Wildcats
Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson both pursued a major in Communications from Villanova University. While Hart joined for the free MacBook, his now All-Star teammate preferred to receive a proper university education. Pushed by his mother, Brunson wanted to graduate with a proper college degree.
Although Brunson was eligible for the draft at the end of his second year in college, his parents suggested that he should stay back to complete his graduation. Such was his drive to be a graduate, that Brunson turned down multiple prestigious basketball camps to stay on campus in the summer and complete his program.
Both Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson are now teammates on the New York Knicks. Alongside a drive to push for a deep playoff run, the former Villanova Wildcats proclaim the importance of education through their means.
