In a bold move that caught the attention of thousands, ex-NBA social media manager Dean Joannou posted two revealing messages from the NBA’s official Facebook account yesterday morning. These unsanctioned posts spotlighted what Joannou described as poor treatment and inadequate compensation of the league’s social media employees.

At 8:25 a.m. Eastern Time, Joannou initially took the chance to promote his new venture, Epoch Digital Consulting, which offers affordable social media and PR services. This already bold act was then followed by a piece of more shocking news about the NBA’s internal workings.

Joannou openly wrote about his long hours, sometimes working 14-hour shifts without breaks, earning less than $50k annually post-tax, and having to wait 90 days for health insurance. He even mentioned NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, drawing even more attention to the concerns stated.

“How do I log out of this? Haven’t worked here in weeks. Anyway, the NBA overextends its social media employees greatly to the detriment of their health and social lives for a salary of less than $50k annually after taxes. I worked 14-hour shifts without breaks at times. Shoutout, Adam Silver. We don’t get health insurance until 90 days on the job! That’s silly, isn’t it? Glad I resigned, no need for a job to get in the way of your happiness. Donate to mental health causes”

Although Silver most likely doesn’t directly manage the social media team, Joannou’s choice to bring him up shows how angry he is. The statement implies that systemic problems extend far up the organizational structure.
