Bill Simmons has made it to the NBA headlines as he recently gave out major and secret updates around Robert Sarver’s situation. The league which was called soft by many in the past months has unexpectedly turned into the most controversial one in just a matter of some weeks. And, it all started with Robert Sarver as a detailed and independent investigation by the league against him and the Phoenix Suns revealed how bad of an owner he was and also many of his other ill-mannerisms and wrongdoings.
The reports were out since last year but he denied all those allegations and kept rolling around. But fortunately, it’s all done and dusted now as Robert Sarver is about to sell the teams. The league also announced a hefty punishment for him which didn’t satisfy the fans as they believed the league was going easy on him. But Bill Simmons recently revealed how all of that was planned and Adam Silver has always been steps ahead of us having multiple options to kick out the ‘bad-guy’.
The reports first revealed the harsh reality of Robert Sarver. He was a racist and bully. He is also accused of using the “N-Word” at least five times on different occasions. Robert was also booked for racism and sexual misconduct with several Suns and Mercury staff members. Over 70 victims have spoken out against him. The investigation also stated that Robert was also “engaged in instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees” and “made many sex-related comments in the workplace.”
After it was all revealed, Adam Silver announced punishment for Robert Sarver. He got suspended for a whole season and was fined $10 million for inappropriate workplace conduct as he created a toxic environment. The league also wants him to “complete training program focused on respect and appropriate workplace conduct”.
Many called out the league for this particular punishment as everyone wanted him kicked out. Adam Silver even received some criticism but he always had a plan and everything went accordingly. As the Phoenix Suns and Mercury are up for sale and he didn’t force it. As Robert Sarver is doing it personally before Michael Jordan steps into the conversation. Bill Simmons explained how the end game being the same for everyone made it a bit easy as players came out to get the job done and Adam Silver didn’t really had to step in and force his exit. Everything Bill Simmons pointed out which basically was the plan is mentioned here below thanks to the Reddit post for making it all easy:
- The public got the story wrong.
- Adam Silver got a lot of flack for not levying a greater punishment against Sarvor.
- Adam Silver was playing 3D chess by allowing everyone think that he was being easy on Server. Adam Silver took the hits, but he was just the tip of the spear.
- Silver orchestrated the effort to squeeze Sarvor out, including pulling together players (e.g. Lebron James, Chris Paul), sponsors, the minority owners, and other team owners.
- Lebron James and Chris Paul “calling out” Silver was a part of the plan.
- In the rich guy circles, their message to Sarver had a different tone. More along the lines of “hey, you can make a lot of money, what do you want to be the punching bag for”?
- If owner and player pressure didn’t work, the league was planning to pull the nuclear card: Michael Jordan would be the last piece to come out and implore Slarver to sell. That would have been a deathblow for him and hugely embarrassing for a bunch of different reasons.
- Once Robert Solver knew that Jordan was looming, he capitulated.
- Simmons speculates that Robert Smith’s ownership stake will be valued at $1.5 billion. Suns will probably be valued at $4.5 billion when all is said and done.
Michael Jordan stepping in and showing Robert Sarver the way out would have really been very disrespectful and that’s not how anyone wants to exit a business. Because you never know what Black Jesus has to say. So it’s fair to say Adam Silver had it all planned right but none of it is needed now as the job’s finished and everyone owes Silver an apology.
