Over the last few months, the French professional basketball player Alexandre Sarr has seen a notable surge in his profile, earning widespread acclaim as a top-three prospect for the 2024 NBA draft. Introduced to basketball at the age of four by his father and brother, Olivier, who presently plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA.
The youngster’s transition from his native France to join Real Madrid’s Cadet A in Spain has been immense to watch. During his initial two seasons, he honed his talents on the youth team. Following a fruitful stint of two seasons with Overtime Elite (OTE), Sarr inked a deal with the Perth Wildcats in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL). His signing marked participation in the league’s innovative Next Stars initiative.
In September, the basketball realm caught a glimpse of Sarr’s potential in action during the G League Invitational. It was a defining moment as his team, the Wildcats, went head-to-head with the formidable Ignite roster, boasting projected first-round prospects Ron Holland and Izan Almansa.
During the 124-105 loss to the Ignite, the Frenchman showcased his prowess with 17 points, including two 3-pointers, along with seven rebounds and six blocks. Impressively, just two days later in a rematch against the Ignite, the 18-year-old Sarr dominated with 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting, securing 10 rebounds and contributing six blocks in his team’s triumphant 127-112 victory.
Fans react to another Wembanyama-esque player from France
Toweringly at 7-foot-1 with an impressive 7-foot-5 wingspan, Sarr took center stage, stunning everyone by averaging 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, six blocks, and two assists in the matchups against the Ignite. His impactful performance and physique drew parallels to last year’s number one pick, Victor Wembanyama, both hailing from France.
His physical attributes and performance against the Ignite team sparked a frenzy on social media, with popular social media platform X seeing the most reactions and comments.

While the last 7-footer Victor Wembanyama has already made a mark with the San Antonio Spurs, Sarr is obviously still a work in progress. There are aspects of his game that still require refining. However, his standout performance against the Ignite provided a glimpse of his immense potential.
