French NBA star Victor Wembanyama has come under scrutiny in his first season. The most hyped rookie since LeBron James is monitored every game about his performance. The media brought up something about his teammates that has been doing the rounds recently.

Speaking after the San Antonio Spurs blowout win against the Charlotte Hornets yesterday, Wembanyama was asked a specific question about his teammates. He was told that previously, from his Euro League days, there was talk that players surrounding Wembanyama did not pass him the ball much. This is what Wemby replied to the question:

There's nobody on the team that doesn't want to pass me the ball, and there is nobody that I don't wanna pass the ball to, and lately it has showed.

Wembanyama used the recent improved overall play from the Spurs to highlight his point about gelling with his teammates.

Wembanyama also highlighted during the post-game press conference that he was not a conventional player. So, adjustments will be required from both him and his teammates to adjust to the game. The 7′ 4″ French phenom has unique skills for such a tall player.

Wembanyama extinguished the notion that his Spurs teammates do not pass him the ball. For most Spurs players, Wembanyama is the new addition they have to adjust to. Any rookie will have growing pains, especially from playing in a different continent. The ceiling is high for Wemby in the NBA.

Wembanyama and the task of adjusting to the NBA

Victor Wembanyama was drafted as the 1st overall pick in this year’s draft. During and after the draft, many analysts touted the adjustment to the league as the most important part he had to work on. After all, the NBA is the most physically demanding basketball league in the world. Many said he would have to bulk up like his countryman Rudy Gobert did.

After finishing December with a league second-worst 5-27 record, the Spurs seem to have turned the corner ever so slightly. In January, they are 2-3. The three games they lost were close single-digit losses. That is without tonight’s game against the Chicago Bulls, in which Wembanyama sat out to rest his recently sprained ankle.

Wembanyama referred to their improved play this month as a look into how he and his teammates are gelling. We will have to see in the coming games if his theory holds.
