In record-breaking news, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis has agreed to a 3-year, $186 million extension with the team that runs through 2028. The move on the Lakers’ part signifies the organization’s faith in Davis and his talent. The Chicago-born All-Star had two years and about $84 million left on his current deal, but with the new deal being signed, he will now make over $270 million over the rest of his contract.

Before joining the Lakers, Davis played for the New Orleans Pelicans for seven seasons, establishing himself as one of the most dominant players on both ends. He was eventually traded to the Lakers in 2019 in exchange for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round picks. In his first season with the Lakeshow, Davis won a championship alongside ‘The King’ LeBron James in the Orlando bubble.

The new extension means Davis will earn roughly around $62 million over three seasons, making it the highest annual salary in the history of the NBA. While ‘The Brow’ is one of the most skilled big men in the league today and has the numbers to show for it, multiple injuries have robbed him of becoming the most dominant basketball player in the modern-day era.

When healthy, Davis has proved that he can carry his team on his back and lead by example by producing on both ends of the floor at a high level. The Lakers’ most recent season was the best example: they started their campaign with a 2-10 record but turned things around and eventually made it to the Western Conference Finals. Davis was a big reason why.

In the 56 regular season games he played last season, he averaged 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks, becoming a nightmare for opposition defenses.

The Los Angeles Lakers were one of the busiest teams during the offseason. While it was important for the organization to ensure that they re-sign Anthony Davis, they also wanted to bring back a few key pieces which helped them majorly last year, such as Rui HachimuraD’Angelo Russell, and latest sensation Austin Reaves, all of whom were signed to multi-year deals to play again for the Lakers.

The Lakers look rock solid on paper, but it remains to be seen how head coach Darwin Ham can utilize his new players. The most crucial factor to consider will be James and Davis’s health.

Considering LeBron James is turning 39 years old this year and did miss a few games last year, and Anthony Davis has had his history with many injury problems, the only thing that could come in the way of the Lakers achieving their goal would be the bad health of their two superstars.
