The Denver Nuggets faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener Tuesday Night (PST). The two had last met during the Western Conference Finals where the Nuggets had decisively beat the Lakers. Tuesday was just a mini-replay of that thrashing all over again. The Nuggets beat the Lakers by 12 points, 119-107.
The Nuggets, however, didn’t have such a huge advantage the whole game. During half-time, the Nuggets only had a 9-point lead over the Lakers. The LA Lakers had all the momentum on their side and they could’ve turned it around. Unfortunately for them, Anthony Davis had other plans. Davis went completely cold the second half, bricking every shot he took and putting up a dismal performance.
Sports analyst Colin Cowherd compared Davis to a McDonald’s ice cream machine saying:
When it works it's amazing, but it's about 50% of the time.
If the Lakers are to truly become NBA championship contenders this season, they will need Davis to step up when the team needs him the most. If Davis continues to disappoint like he did tonight, it will be a problem for the Lakers in the long run.
How did Anthony Davis’ second-half performance against the Nuggets look like?
The most shocking fact about Anthony Davis’ performance against the Nuggets was that he went scoreless in the second half. From the beginning of the third quarter to the end of the fourth, he did not score a single basket.
Davis did indeed make six shot attempts in the final half of the game, but unfortunately, none of them found the mark. He went 0-6 from the field when the Los Angeles Lakers needed him the most.
avis will likely need to have a serious conversation with Lakers head coach Darvin Ham to dissect his performance. Introspection and a thorough review of the game film will be essential for him to identify areas where he can improve.
