Every fan of the game has their own favourite player in the league. Believe it or not, NBA players themselves also have an opinion on this matter. A lot of players within the league have their favourites among their colleagues. Anthony Edwards recently revealed in an interview who his favourite player was and why he considers both of them to be similar.
Edwards has been steadily rising in the league as a star for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although Edwards hasn’t had much playoff success, he has shown glimpses of the franchise leader he was predicted to be, leading by example. In the 2023 playoffs, within the first round of the Western Conference, the Timberwolves arrived as the eigth seed. They had lost their spot to the Los Angeles Lakers as a part of the play-in tournament after winning against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Edwards, recently in an interview for Heir, revealed that his favourite player was 2 time NBA champion and FMVP- Kevin Durant. According to Edwards not only is Durant his favourite player, but also the GOAT. Edwards drew similarities between himself and Durant saying ” He just love the game. He just remind me of myself, he just don’t care.”
With how Edward’s career is going, he might very well be on the path to achieving the same level of greatness, if not more, than that of Durant. Anthony Edwards was named to his first All-Star game this past season. He was only 21 years old; coincidentally, Durant was also 21 when he received his first All-Star nod.
Has Anthony Edwards lived up to the No. 1 draft pick standards?
The Minnesota Timberwolves were a struggling franchise in 2019, with a 19-45 record. This landed them the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, Anthony Edwards. Edwards showed massive potential as he averaged 19.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in his rookie year. He lost out on Rookie of the Year to Lamelo Ball but said he was “happy.”
Edwards showed steady growth as his points per game increased to 21.3 and then 24.6 in the past season, resulting in his first All-Star selection. Even though the Timberwolves lost in the first round, he didn’t allow his team to get swept, scoring 34 points and 29 more in the elimination game.
The budding superstar has now been making the rounds internationally as a member of the FIBA USA squad. This team also includes other NBA stars such as Jalen Brunson, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Paolo Banchero.
Edwards has been a breath of fresh air for the franchise, allowing them to achieve playoff berths and more consistent regular-season success. His potential to improve is sky-high, and he has shown himself to be the player the Timberwolves can build a franchise around. Minnesota put their faith in Edwards and signed him to a rookie extension contract with up to $260 million over five years.
