The Minnesota Timberwolves lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The game between the top two seeds in the Western Conference went down to the wire. And surprisingly it was Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards whose missed free throws proved costly for his team.

Heading into the final 6 seconds of regulation, the Thunder were up three points over the Timberwolves. On the ensuing inbounds pass, veteran point guard Mike Conley received the ball and passed to Anthony Edwards who was sprinting towards the three-point line.

Edwards launched a three-point shot only to be fouled by Thunder forward Lugentz Dort from behind. Since the shot did not go in, the foul led to three free throws. Edwards missed the first two. On the last free-throw even his fake free-throw to bounce the ball off the rim and grab the rebound failed to even hit the rim.

Had Edwards made all of his free throws, the game could have at least gone to overtime. That is provided the Thunder failed to make a shot with 3 seconds to go. Minnesota’s league-leading defense is more than capable of stopping the Thunder. Hence, Edwards missed free throws cost them the game. The Timberwolves lost the game 102-97.

Although the blame for the loss is squarely on the shoulders of Edwards, it was the whole team’s undoing. None of the Timberwolves players scored more than 20 points. Despite grabbing 13 more rebounds than the Thunder, it was the 21-8 turnovers that also cost them the game. The Thunder rallied in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Fans not letting Anthony Edwards get away with this one

Despite the Timberwolves woes throughout the game, the missed free throws were the talking point for the basketball world. Fans did not appreciate Edwards who is usually an 85% free throw shooter missed the clutch shots to lose the game.

Hopefully, Edwards can move on from this. The Timberwolves need him at his best to do better than last season’s first-round exit. Edwards will also learn and grow. The young superstar needs to move on.
