The NBA, in it’s recent years has undergone a 3-point revolution. It has seen more and more teams taking shots beyond the arc. Entire offenses have been shaped around getting their best shooter an open look from the perimeter. As such, the value of the 3-point shot has risen in the game. This increase in value has also led to more players developing their 3-point game to become a more important asset.
This means that big men, have also started developing a 3-point shot. In previous eras, they used to stay in the perimeter or post-up their defender. However, not it seems that they have started to practice their shooting as well. Debates have arisen on whether or not big men should take threes. One of the lates contributors to this debate was Lakers head coach Darvin Ham, when he said that the Lakers’ big man – Anthony Davis – should take more threes.
Stephen A. Smith was of an entirely different opinion however. The renowned analyst said, “Come on coach! NO! NO! NO!…Anthony Davis also has the 12th worst 3-point percentage in NBA history. Why are you encouraging him to shoot more threes”
Smith argued that there was no point in having Davis take more 3’s since he was historically poor at it. While this revolution has increased the importance of 3’s in the game, it doesn’t mean the other aspects of the game should be forgotten. A balanced offense has both – a good outside and an inside presence. Hopefully for the Lakers, Ham figures out how set up his pieces before the regular season starts.

If Anthony Davis isn’t taking the threes, who is?
A good three point shooter is vital to an NBA team in today’s league. This means that the Lakers need someone to take the long-distance shots consistently and it obviously isn’t Davis.
For that department the Lakers could look towards their recent signing, Gabe Vincent. Vincent was excellent beyond the arc in last season’s playoffs – averaging 38%. In the Lakers pre-season game against the Kings, Vincent was 4/8 from 3 – incredibly efficient.
While it is unclear whether or not Vincent will be in the starting lineup this season. However, if he keeps up these performances, it is not hard to see him in a spot where he is the starting point guard for the Lakers. Vincent will be praying that he has developed his game enough this off-season for coach Darvin Ham to think him worthy to be in the starting line-up.
