Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young has been fined $25,000 for throwing the game ball into the spectator stands.
Trae Young
Trae Young has been fined $25,000 for throwing the ball into the crowd after the Atlanta Hawks beat the Chicago Bulls in a buzzer-beater from rookie A.J. Griffin. The win against the Bulls was almost an impossible win for the Hawks, wherein Griffin made an impossible basket off the lob from Jalen Johnson.
The game between the two teams remained a close neck-to-neck match-up and in the last second was just a one-point game. With just over 1 second remaining on the clock, the Hawks were trailing by 121-122. Took the ball out of bounds. As Johnson stood outside the line waiting for a perfect opportunity to throw the lob. Eventually he found Griffin cutting to the basket.
Young was lurking between the defenders, perhaps the play wasn’t drawn for him to find an open shot. Despite facing away from the basket, the rookie caught the lob and turning towards the basket while he was in the air scored with a floater right before the buzzer sounded. The stunned expression from the Bulls showed they barely expected the basket off the play drawn by Nate MacMillan.
Trae Young not happy with the $25,000 fine for celebrating an impossible win against the Chicago Bulls
Excited with the win, ecstatic Young took the ball once it fell through the net and launched it into the stands among the players. However, the grand celebration came with a price, as he was fined for throwing the ball.
The Hawks’ buzzer-beater victory over the Bulls on Sunday night was thrilling, but it came at a cost for Trae Young. The NBA fined Young $25,000 on Monday for throwing the basketball into the stands after the game. Obviously, the Hawks guard wasn’t happy with the fine and expressed his disappointment on Twitter.
He wrote, “Sorry to the Hawks fan(s) who got a chance to touch the game winning ball. Didn’t know I couldn’t do that,” he tweeted. “Can’t celebrate s— anymore.”
Young has a $215 million contract with the Hawks and perhaps $25,000 does not make any difference to the amount he earns. The Hawks lost their last game against the Memphis Grizzlies while Trae was out with back tightness. Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks will play Orlando Magic in their next game on Wednesday and hopefully, he doesn’t give the league a chance to fine him more money.
