In a recent episode of the ALL THE SMOKE basketball podcast, rookie sensation Austin Reaves shared a hilarious and surreal moment from his time at a mini-Lakers camp. Practicing alongside LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis, the group was playfully dubbed “The Beatles” by LeBron himself, thrusting Reaves into a sudden taste of fame and the life of Basketball Royalty.

Austin Reaves vividly recounted his conversation with LeBron James as he vied for a spot on the roster. The young gun revealed, “Bron looked at me, and asked me if I ever heard of some band. I was like, ‘Nah.’ Then he was like, ‘Do you know who The Beatles are?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ And he was like, ‘Well, we’re The Beatles.’ I was like, ‘Oh, s***!’” Austin found himself utterly awestruck by the larger-than-life presence that surrounded LeBron and the star-studded Lakers lineup,

For rookie Austin Reaves, this newfound level of attention was entirely unfamiliar, and he had no idea about the constant frenzy of admiration that surrounded them at all times.

Austin Reaves had a breakout year last season

Austin Reaves was among the top performers for the Lakers in the playoffs and led them to the Western Conference Finals, averaging 16.8 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.5 rebounds. He posted 68.6 from the field and 73.8 true shooting percentage against them. This, alone, is enough to have him the title “the third-best player for the Lakers” after Davis and James.

He was surely a breakout star for the Lakers last season and fit right into the reliable-versatile defender category that the Lakers are and were after. Throughout the season, he had an average of 13 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds which is very impressive for a player his age. Later, when he came into the starting lineup, he averaged 18.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. Following the sensational season, Austin Reaves recently signed a $56 million deal with the LA Lakers.

For Austin Reaves, the mini-camp incident served as a rare glimpse into the lavish and glamorous life of NBA superstars. It also provided a unique perspective on LeBron James’ humble nature as he calmly and accurately described his own life to the rookie.
