The 31-year-old was selected in 2021 as one of the top 25 players in league history and is widely considered as one of the best two way players in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She earned a national collegiate championship and the Player of the Year Award in 2012, and since beginning her professional career in 2013 with the US women’s national basketball team, she has won two Olympic gold medals as well as a WNBA Championship.

Brittney Griner announced her sexual orientation shortly after starting her professional career in 2013, making history as the first openly gay athlete to sign an endorsement deal with Nike. Griner travelled in Russia on February 17 in order to play basketball for the UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA off-season. She has played with them since 2014. She was at the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport when Russian customs officers found two vape cartridges in her luggage that contained small amounts of cannabis oil. Griner has been given a 9-year term after being found guilty of extensive narcotics trafficking into Russia, where cannabis oil is illegal.

In her memoir “In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court,” Griner said that she has experienced hate since she was a youngster and has experienced it all. They know me only as a six-foot-eight basketball player, the one who doesn’t back down, who plays hard, dunks with authority, and lives openly.“
