Tony Snell has recently been in the news for trying to get a full-time NBA contract. He needs that contract to receive medical insurance benefits for his two autistic sons. He can only receive it if he completes 10 years in his playing career. Hall of Famer Charles Barkley came out in support of Snell. Now, Hollywood actor Ben Stiller has chimed in to support Barkley’s call for a contract for Snell.
Tony Snell’s two sons were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. This kind of disorder generally means lifelong medical and therapeutic needs. For any person, it is a daunting task. For an athlete, it makes it worse once their playing days are over. If Snell plays his 10th season, his family will get full medical cover for life. This is why Stiller agreed to Barkley’s calls for Snell to be recruited by an NBA team.
The NBPA has a system in place to provide medical insurance for players. Generally, the players are covered are covered for life even if they play for three seasons. Family members do not get the cover. However, if the player plays for 10 seasons, all eligible members of the family get lifetime insurance coverage. Snell is targeting this cover for his sons.
Here is what Ben Stiller wrote on X, reacting to Charles Barkley bringing attention to Tony Snell’s children:

Charles Barkley while speaking on Inside the NBA on TNT appealed to the 30 NBA teams to sign Snell. His request for Snell’s contract was co-signed by Ben Stiller. Stiller of Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, and Night at the Museum film series fame, is a known activist. An avid New York Knicks fan, Stiller agreeing to Barkley’s call has boosted Snell’s case.
Tony Snell needed Charles Barkley and Ben Stiller’s support
Tony Snell desperately needs the medical insurance his two autistic boys need. Autism is a lifelong health problem with no cure. The medical bills for the rest of their lives will be massive. Snell’s is in the twilight of his career. After this, he may not be able to earn at the same level he has been able to. Most athletes do not end up with stable career options after their sporting career is over.
Snell knows that, and his call for a full-time contract should fall on some ears. Although there are only two teams with cap space currently. However, any team could restructure their finances to get Snell a deal. Snell should be perfectly happy to receive the league minimum of $1.1 million. He cares about the future of his two sons.
Charles Barkley and Ben Stiller have advocated for Tony Snell. Now it is time for the NBA and the teams to act and help the man with a valid cause.
