One of the greatest players in NBA history passed away, and the league is in deep sorrow. Bill Russell, a member of the Boston Celtics and an 11-time NBA champion with them, was also well-known for his civil rights advocacy and his irrepressible laugh. It is widely documented how determined Russell was to help his teams win and advance social concerns. The GOAT Celtic was the epitome of a winner who inspired everyone around him to do more. Bill Russell played in the league for 13 seasons and won 11 titles. Russell entered the game as a winner, and he left the game with a victory that sealed the championship.

When Russell bashed Charles Barkley at the 2018 NBA Awards, it became one of his most well-remembered moves. During NBA awards show in 2018, a camera caught the legendary Celtics player mocking Hall of Famer Charles Barkley with an impish grin tattooed over his face. The five-time MVP said he was unaware he was appearing on live television and later expressed regret for flipping the finger. Evidently, Russell has done this in the past and his first victim wasn’t Barkley. While taking a photo with Chauncey Billups and Kevin Garnett for Instagram, the ring god flipped at a helpless cameraman once.

Bill Russell- The incarnation of an NBA legend

Bill Russell is unquestionably the best champion in NBA history, having won 11 titles. The Celtics were a dynasty in the late 1950s and early 1960s under the leadership of the five-time MVP, who averaged 15.1 points and 22.5 rebounds per game over the course of his 13-year career. The Celtics won 11 championships and advanced to 12 NBA Finals in his 13 seasons as a player. He had eight regular-season and three postseason games with 40 or more rebounds during his career, and he averaged at least 18.6 rebounds per game in each of his 13 seasons. Despite not playing since 1968–1969, he has 21,620 rebounds to rank as the No. 2 rebounder in NBA history.

When Russell replaced a retiring Auerbach prior to the 1966–1967 season, he made NBA history by becoming the league’s first Black head coach. Russell was a player-coach who won two titles. After winning his 11th championship in 1969, he announced his retirement and six years later, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Russell never received Finals MVP, mostly because the honor was launched during his last season. Russell has subsequently given the trophy to the victor at each NBA Finals since the league renamed the award in his honor in 2009. Russell is one of just four Hall of Famers who has played and coached in the NBA, including Tom Heinsohn, Bill Sharman, and Lenny Wilkens.

Russell had chosen the simplest and most direct method of trolling Barkley in which  Russell flipped at Barkley. At the NBA awards, Barkley appeared on stage with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a member of the Hall of Fame. Bill Russell acknowledged Barkley’s greeting by giving him a large bird when he took a moment to do so. Never once was this done out of contempt for the players and a ll of it was intended to be viewed as sporting banter and was a characteristic of the man Russell was. He had a wonderful personality that won the hearts and respect of everyone in the league.

It is clear that his goal was not just to win titles as he received the the presidential medal of freedom for his social causes and his contribution on the court. Only someone as great as him can have the privilege of flipping a Hall of Famer on live television. The whole basketball community is devastated by Bill Russell’s passing at the age of 88.
