“Are you going to change the rules because Joel Embiid’s feelings got hurt?” Bill Simmons slams NBA for altering the All-NBA selection process
Joel Embiid on new Covid19 Protocols
Joel Embiid has been one of the best players in the past few years. At seven feet, the man can do anything from passing the rock around, dribbling past defenders and is an elite scorer. Though even after an amazing season leading the league in scoring the previous season. He missed out on being included in the All-NBA First Team. While many consider a flaw prevalent in the selection process, Analyst Bill Simmons believes otherwise.
“Are we just going to change the rules now because Joel Embiid’s feelings got hurt? That he didn’t win the MVP and is on the second-team All-NBA?” Bill Simmons sighted examples from the past, “Go back and look at the 60s where it’s Bill Russell vs. Wilt Chamberlain, Or go and look at the early 2000s where it’s KG vs. C-Webb vs. Duncan vs. Dirk.” emphasising how the rules have always been the same over the years.
The Selection Process Of All-NBA Teams
The NBA began picking All-NBA Teams in 1946, with two teams each with five players, selected regardless of their positions. In 1956, the league changed the rules and selection process to include positions. Each All-NBA team includes two guards, one center and two forwards. The 1989 season saw the edition of a third team.
NBA players receive five points for a first-team vote, three points for a second-team vote, and one point for a third-team vote. The players with the highest point totals at their respective positions make the first team, with the next highest making the second team and so forth. LeBron James has the most All-NBA selections with eighteen. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan previously shared the record with fifteen. James also has the most All-NBA First Team honors with thirteen, while Bryant and Karl Malone are tied for second-most with eleven. Malone and James each share a record eleven consecutive first-team selections.

Will Embiid Ever Make The All-NBA First Team?
Embiid has made four All-NBA Second Teams at this point in his career, but he has never been able to be on the All-NBA First Team, losing out to other centers. He lost the spot in 2019-20 to Anthony Davis and three times( 2018-2019, 2020-21, 2021-22) to MVP Nicola Jokic.
While there was a lot of clamour for Embiid to be MVP this year, the award went to Nicola Jokic who earned it the season before that too. While Embiid has not made the first team just yet or has been losing out to Jokic for the award. He has been a great player and has made the Sixers a contender for the title. If he continues to play well, an eventual First Team selection is a sure deal for The Process.
