Billionaire Nets owner Joe Tsai publicly goes against Kevin Durant on Twitter

Joe Tsai, Kevin Durant

Over the weekend, NBA star Kevin Durant met in person with Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai and reinforced his request for a trade. Tsai was told to pick between Durant and the team of general manager Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash. Details of the meeting between Durant and the owner of the Brooklyn Nets were revealed by Shams Charania of The Athletic. As a result of his trade request made before the start of free agency, Durant has essentially been at the centre of all the turmoil this summer. According to reports, KD is “resolute in his position” and Brooklyn has “direct knowledge” of the factors driving his desire to leave the team.

This is the most recent development in a storyline that started on June 30 when Durant informed the Nets that he desired a trade as the start of the summer’s free agency window was approaching. The 12-time All-Star, four-time scoring champion, three-time Olympic gold medalist, and two-time NBA champion is not a free agent; he still has four years and $198 million left on his deal with the Nets, who will certainly seek a large number of players and draft picks in exchange for him. It was fairly likely that Durant would rejoin the team for the following season when events took an unexpected turn in July.

Kevin Durant and the Nets saga

Three years ago, the Brooklyn Nets were having a good time as a team after acquiring Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019 free agency, instantly transforming the organization—which had never won a championship—into a serious Eastern Conference title contender. The Nets’ situation is deteriorating and they are still without a title after three years. If Durant’s request for a trade is likely to be granted, Kyrie will almost surely follow him out of Brooklyn. A trade involving Durant or Irving might materialize at any time given that the NBA’s perception of the futures of both All-Star players remains incredibly unpredictable.

If they are traded, Kevin Durant and Kyrie’s three-year tenure with the Nets would come to a tragic conclusion. Throughout his time with the team, Brooklyn only managed to win one postseason series. Durant  was supposed to help Brooklyn win a championship even though he missed the first season of his deal due to an Achilles injury. Amazingly, Durant and Irving combined for just 58 of 247 games during their tenure with the Nets. Due to their injuries and Irving’s refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the two rarely played together on the court.

Twitter reacts to Joe Tsai’s tweet regarding the Durant saga

Kevin Durant has reportedly given the Nets organization an ultimatum, as reported by Charania. The star dropped the bomb on Brooklyn in a move that had Tsai choose between Durant and the duo of GM Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash. This is how NBA fans around Twitter reacted to this incident:

The Boston Celtics have been mentioned most often among the teams to whom Kevin Durant has been linked. Marcus Smart and All-Star Jaylen Brown have both been mentioned as potential trade targets. Even though Durant has made his opinions on the topic plain, he is not in a position where he feels he can make demands of this kind. But if things go in that direction, a hostile environment emerging in Brooklyn may be bad news for the team moving ahead. There is substantial debate about whether Tsai intends to trade Durant in order to prevent such a scenario.
