The Damian Lillard trade saga has finally come to a close as he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks from the Portland Trail Blazers. While the guard had been vocal about his preference to take his talents to the Miami Heat, he’ll be rejoicing as he’ll be joining forces with Giannis Antetokounmpo.

For the entirety of this off-season, the NBA realm thought that Lillard would eventually be on his way to Miami. Nevertheless, The Athletic’s Shams Charania recently disclosed that during their initial trade discussions for Lillard, the Blazers made it clear that they were seeking either Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo as part of the deal.

According to Charania, the Miami Heat believed that Portland showed “no interest in engaging in a deal with them” following the Blazers’ initial trade request. In response, Miami countered by offering as many as three first-round picks, multiple second-round picks, Nikola Jović, expiring contracts, and Tyler Herro, who would then be included in a trade to a third team to secure additional assets.

In the end, Lillard was involved in a blockbuster three-team trade, making his move to the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Portland Trail Blazers received Jrue Holiday, Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, a 2029 first-round draft pick, and two pick swaps. The Phoenix Suns, as the third team in this deal, acquired Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson.

Lillard’s move marks a significant opportunity for him to contend for an NBA championship following 11 memorable years in Portland. Although his time in “Rip City” may not have yielded a wealth of success, he unquestionably solidified his status as one of the game’s premier guards. Now, teaming up with Giannis, they are poised to form a formidable duo ready to strike fear into their opponents.
