Brandon Miller, selected as the number 2 pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2023 NBA Draft, has the world at his feet. The incredibly talented forward who played college basketball for the Alabama Crimson Tide will now look to showcase what he is all about on a global stage when the NBA season begins in October later this year.

The former McDonald’s All-American averaged 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in the 2022-23 season with the Alabama Crimson Tide and decided to forgo the remainder of his collegiate eligibility to enter the 2023 NBA Draft after the season ended.

Miller’s journey to the NBA Draft wasn’t an easy one, though, as he had to deal with a murder case back in January 2023 in which his name got involved. The 20-year-old former SEC player of the year was linked to the death of Jamea Jonae Harris, a 23-year-old woman who was shot dead by a man named Michael Lynn Davis. Miller’s then-college teammate Darius Miles handed the gun over to Davis to commit the fateful deed.

The story goes that on January 15, 2023, Darius Miles hitched a ride from Miller to go to a nightclub in Tuscaloosa and brought a gun along and kept it in the backseat of Miller’s car, something that Miller was completely unaware of. Miller then left to go eat and came back an hour later after receiving a text from Miles to pick him up and ‘bring his gun along.’ After arriving at Miles’s location, Miles handed the gun over the Davis, who went to confront Harris and shot into a vehicle where she was a passenger, killing her. Davis and Miles were both indicted for capital murder.

Why wasn’t Brandon Miller charged?

Miller’s attorney at the time clarified that he had not touched the gun, nor was he involved in its exchange. He also had no clue that an illegal activity involving the gun would occur. Tuscaloosa’s chief assistant district attorney Paula Whitley said, “There’s nothing we could charge him with”. Miller’s coach at Alabama too, supported him, saying it was a case of Miller being in the “wrong spot, wrong time.”

Miles and Davis are currently in jail and are awaiting trial, whereas Miller has not been arrested in this case. While speaking to reporters in Manhattan on Wednesday, Miller initially refused to comment on the incident but did say later that he does not expect to be charged.

He said, “NBA teams kinda did their background on me and they kinda found out that I was a great guy, great character. I don’t think they’re really worried about the character part of it now. I think it’s just basketball now.’  Now that Miller has put this incident behind him, here’s hoping that he has a great basketball career ahead.
