Brandon Miller, alumnus of the University of Alabama, was selected 2nd overall in the 2023 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He joins Alonzo Mourning, Emeka Okafor and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist as the 4th player that Charlotte has selected at number 2 in the draft over the years.
The Hornets were initially keen on drafting Scoot Henderson, but after seeing both Miller and Henderson in multiple workout sessions, the team decided to go ahead with Miller, who also impressed former majority team owner Michael Jordan. The move also makes sense from a position standpoint as the Hornets already have LaMelo Ball at the point guard position and hence drafting a forward with great size and shooting was the right way to go.
Miller was interviewed immediately after he was drafted. Expressing his excitement, he said, “I’m definitely having fun here, just seeing all the guys here. Really excited just to see all my friends just to be drafted cause I know it’s one of their dreams, it’s definitely one of my dreams, so it’s a good moment to be here.”
It truly was an emotional moment for Miller and his parents, who were seated beside him during his interview and were asked about what they want the fans in Charlotte to know about their son. His dad said, “That they’re getting a great kid, a great young man, great character, he’s going to bring a lot to the city of Charlotte. Once the city of Charlotte gets to know him, I think they’re gonna fall in love with him.“
While Miller and the Hornets organization are excited about what the future holds, many Hornets are not pleased with the decision to draft Miller over Scoot Henderson.

Let’s face it. It’s difficult to be a Charlotte Hornets fan. The organization has never won a championship since it came into existence in 1989. Many people thought that after Michael Jordan took over as majority owner in 2010, the city would finally win its first title. Unfortunately, the Hornets are one the most underperforming teams in the league today, and Jordan recently decided to part ways with the team as he sold his majority stake.
Hornets fans did not hold back when criticizing the decision made by the organization to draft Brandon Miller instead of Scoot Henderson. Here are some reactions:
It’s surprising to see reactions like these come in, considering in the past, so many top picks have been hyped up and have not lived up to expectations. While fans might think Henderson is the better player but what if Miller fits in better with the Hornets? Fans will need to be patient, and who knows, maybe Miller proves everyone wrong and takes the city by storm.
