BREAKING: Brooklyn Nets terminate discussions for acquiring Ime Udoka and sign Jacque Vaughn as full-time headcoach

Ime Udoka, Jacque Vaughn

A week and a half after giving Jacque Vaughn the interim coach title after firing Steve Nash, the Brooklyn Nets have officially declared him their head coach. Following significant backlash among NBA insiders, Brooklyn ultimately decided against signing suspended Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka.

The Brooklyn Nets appeared to have its next head coach chosen when they fired Steve Nash earlier this month. Ime Udoka, the Celtics coach who had an affair with a team staffer and was suspended for a year, was apparently going to be Brooklyn’s new replacement. However, the Nets decided against it, possibly not wanting to deal with additional unwanted attention while coping with the effects of Kyrie Irving’s suspension. But for their former assistant and recent interim, Jacque Vaughn, everything worked out well.

The Nets officially announced on Wednesday that Jacque Vaughn, the former assistant coach, will lead the team for the remainder of the season rather than Ime Udoka. Since Nash was fired, Vaughn had been the team’s interim head coach. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Jacque Vaughn’s appointment also involves a contract that lasts through the 2023–24 season. After a rough start to the season, Vaughn has the Nets on the right track and in their most recent five games, the team has a 3-2 record.

Brooklyn Nets and their promotion of Jacque Vaughn amid controversies

On the basketball court and as a coach, Vaughn has spent a lot of time in the NBA as he has played in the NBA for a total of 12 years for five different teams. This will not be Vaughn’s first time serving as a head coach. After three seasons and no postseason appearances, while serving as the head coach of the Orlando Magic, he was fired by the team in 2012. In the end, the Nets hired Vaughn to work as an assistant coach in 2019.

When previous Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson resigned midway through the 2019–20 season, Vaughn took over once more and in ten games, he went on to finish the season 7-3. As a head coach, Vaughn now has a cumulative record of 67-163 in which the advantage of this latest opportunity is that it will feature the most talented team he has ever coached. Brooklyn was 2-5 when Nash departed the team, and as of right now, Vaughn has improved that record to 5-7.

Why wasn’t Ime Udoka hired and what’s next for the Nets?

Reports suggested that the Nets started looking for a replacement before firing former head coach Steve Nash. Ime Udoka, who is presently on suspension from the Boston Celtics for breaking team rules, was the speculated coach. Brooklyn made a change and appointed Vaughn as the temporary head coach during that time. The Nets’ sudden decision to remove the interim tag from their former assistant coach may have more to do with Udoka’s ongoing issues, where key players and others inside the NBA were constantly pushing against the appointment of Udoka behind the scenes.

Whether or not Vaughn can put the squad back on the proper course is the important question. The Nets front office may have attempted to avoid controversies because the franchise was suffering and was already widely criticized in the beginning of the season. Though he may not have been their preferred candidate for the permanent position, Vaughn is a solid option. Keeping Vaughn around gives the Nets some stability as they try to turn things around this season as the team is currently 5-7 and 3-2 under his leadership.
