WNBA deserted star Britney Griner seems to have a tough time in Russia. Britney was sentenced to nine years in prison for carrying cannabis in her luggage. Last week, Griner’s lawyer talked to the ‘New York Times,’ stating that Britney’s condition is not good and her mental health is deteriorating.
Griner’s lawyer Alexander Boikov said, “She is not yet absolutely convinced that America will be able to take her home. She is very worried about what the price of that will be, and she is afraid that she will have to serve the whole sentence here in Russia.” Boikov also stated that Griner is only allowed to go outside once a day for a one-hour walk in a small courtyard at a penal colony outside Moscow.
Boikov added, “She suffers a lot without her family because she hasn’t seen them for so long and it’s very difficult to talk to them in any way. She has not been in as good condition as I could sometimes find her in, she fears she may wind up in a facility with miserable or inhumane conditions.” Her lawyer also stated spends the rest of her time in a small cell with two cellmates, where Griner sits and sleeps, contributing to a decline in her mental health.
A rough road for Britney Griner continues
WNBA star Britney Griner could be sent back to a different section of the penal colony if she is not freed soon. She could be sent to a prison camp for women where one has to spend hours a day sewing or other forms of physical labor. Russian journalist Ekaterina Kalugina told the ‘New York Times’ that she visited Griner in her cell as part of a civic engagement team that monitors the conditions in Russian prisons for human rights violations.
Kalugina stated, “It’s an old building, and made of stone. When it is hot outside, it’s too hot, and when it’s cold outside, it is too cold.” She also told that Griner had been reading a translation of Dostoyevsky’s political tragedy novel ‘Demons,’ as well as a biography of the ‘Rolling Stones.’ Kalugina also said that when she met Griner, she suffered from pain, including headaches.
