Brittney Griner has recently been all over the headlines as she is a political prisoner in Russia and recently got a sentence of nine long years due to drug smuggling charges. But she was a regular name in the news some years ago too when things weren’t going that great between her and her wife. Brittney Griner married her fellow WNBA star after dating her for a while. The decision was made in haste and she wasn’t really riding with it but still gave it a chance and unfortunately, the two had to part ways and it wasn’t an easy departure for either of them.
Brittney Griner and Gloria Johnson were arrested just three weeks before their wedding and the charges were assault as they were attacking each other. But it all got sorted between them once they made it to the headlines. The relationship they had was already very rocky but still, they were making efforts to build some strong bridges and stay together. But nothing like that happened as even though they got married they had to part ways as soon as possible. And, Brittney Griner did no delay once Gloria got pregnant.
In a statement Brittney Griner quoted: “Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”
While Johnson speaking about her pregnancy said: “It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love…Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold.” Many around them and also most of their fans believe that they parted ways for their good and now it feels understandable too. As Brittney Griner has moved ahead in her life and now is married to her wife Cherelle Griner.
But Brittney Griner right now is stuck in Russia in the worst situation of her life and many believe she is innocent and paying the price for being a global star. She is a decorated American Athlete who has influenced millions of women around the world and paved the way for the LGBTQ community, especially in sports. But still, life is hard for her as she isn’t back on American soil yet and the story remains unchanged since months.
When will Brittney Griner return?
Brittney Griner should have been back on American soil long back ago. Even efforts were made to bring her back but none of those worked. Joe Biden though has promised the country that he’ll get her back on American soil as soon as possible since even he was furious at the sentence announced for BG and called it unacceptable and demanded immediate release. But that’s not how things in Russia work so the two countries right now are negotiating a prisoner swap deal.
But the Vladimir Putin government has brought in an unreal demand. Russia has requested U.S.A to add convicted murderer Vadim Krasikov in the deal for the prisoner swap of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan along with Viktor Bout. Those are some seriously big names who are also a threat to world security. So predicting or even claiming her return is not possible yet.
