Even though it’s probable that Griner might have received up to 10 years in prison, they claim that her current sentence is still “excessive.” In identical cases around Russia, according to the defense attorneys, other convicted violators were given a lighter term, and some of them even obtained parole.

According to Trevor Reed, a former marine who was imprisoned in Russia, the facility where Brittney Griner is being held is likely far better than the one where Paul Whelan, another Marine, is being held. In an interview, he remarked that if he could give the convicts any advise, it would be to try to never lose sight of the support that they have from so many people. Reed advised Griner and Whelan to persevere and maintain their faith as American officials attempt to return them to their native country. Little has changed about the WNBA star’s release as of yet, but we expect learning more about her planned release from custody and return to the United States soon.
