Brittney Griner recently got booked for 9 years in Russia and now calling her a “political prisoner” isn’t wrong. She has been locked up in Russia since February. As the Russian officials found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport (less than two grams of oil). She also has a medical prescription for the oil but that didn’t help her at all. When she pled guilty in court she clearly mentioned that it was unintentionally done as she wasn’t aware of the laws in Russia. But the Russian court cares the least and has Brittney Griner behind the bars and wants her punished for 9 long years which is without a doubt a very wrong judgment and many are standing against it as it’s an international issue and has a decorated athlete involved.
Brittney Griner’s lawyers after the sentence was announced, in their interviews mentioned how unfair the judgement is and how the court ignored all the evidences and simply did what they want to by accepting everything the prosecutors argued. The ask for her punishment was 9 and half years long but the judge sentenced Brittney Griner to nine. This just doesn’t ends here as she isn’t spending that time in a normal prison or jail. As she right now is timed in a Russian Penal Colony.
The Russian Penal Colonies are very common in Russia and they are built like Soviet-Era Gulags and there’s no doubt about the fact that WNBA superstar Brittney Griner is going to have a tough time there. As life in there is full of troubles and harassment. The inmates also gang up on one another and beat each other as the culture in there is very different. Prisoners are also forced to watch Russian Propaganda for hours every day and are also made to perform labor. So BG who is just a prisoner in there will be treated in the very same way and expected to do tasks like making clothes, washing clothes and even construction work. She’s just unfortunate to get stuck in this situation where Russia is trying to make the most out of her during their war against Ukraine as she really is a “political prisoner” from U.S.A who can land them many benefits.
When will Brittney Griner return?
The return of Brittney Griner on American soil is still very uncertain. As Russia and USA are negotiating a prisoner swap deal for their exchange. But the Vladimir Putin government has brought in an unreal demand. Russia has requested U.S.A to add convicted murderer Vadim Krasikov in the deal for the prisoner swap of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan along with Viktor Bout. Those are some seriously big names who are also a threat to world security. So predicting or even claiming her return is not possible yet. But, Joe Biden has promised the country that he’ll get her back on American soil as soon as possible since even he was furious at the sentence announced for BG.
