As the WNBA superstar, Brittney Griner, announced a mental health break after the horrific incidents that happened to her, she was downplayed in the worst way possible by NBA fans. Last year, she was held by the Russian authorities at the Moscow airport for carrying Marijuana with her luggage. Because of the same, she had to serve a 10-month detention in Russian custody.
The public had mixed opinions as she was released from their custody after a prisoner swap. They questioned whether a WNBA professional was worth the same to the country as a dreaded criminal, while some advocated for human rights and celebrated her comeback to the US. She recently gave a statement thanking her team and everyone who supported her in her decision.
After being released, she made a triumphant comeback to the WNBA in June, announcing, “It was good seeing everybody and just being back in Texas…I miss being here. When I came out, and they announced my name, the love meant a lot to me.”
However, her comeback was not without challenges as she was harassed by a YouTuber, Alex Stein, at the Dallas airport, where he confronted her about her time in custody in Russia. The WNBA responded and permitted her and her team to travel chartered for the remaining season.
