Brittney Griner was announced to remain in detention through her case trial for an extended six months. The United States government, Joe Biden administration has been merely informing that they are making efforts for her release but their words have not been practiced yet. Her safety under the surveillance of the Russian federation is highly questionable.

A little over a week ago, her partner had scheduled a phone call. What would have been their first every conversation in over 120 days turned out to be a no show. The Russian authorities claimed to have made several calls to the US but they received no response. The WNBA superstar was detained in February after being caught carrying hashish oil, an illegal substance into the Sheremetyevo International Airport, near Moscow. Brittney Griner plays basketball in Russia during her off-seasons in the US for the UMMC Ekaterinburg team. The Olympic medalist was named as an honorary All-Star by the WNBA this season.

Many speculate that Griner is being held hostage to settle a political trade. Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian illegal arms dealer who was sentenced to around 20 years in prison was looked as a reason why the US has not pushed to her release. It was said that the Russian government had planned to use her as a trade option in exchange for the convict. The Soviet authorities would deny it saying that this was just a matter of violating their laws.

After nearly four months of waiting, Brittney Griner will be headed in trial on Friday. But expert claim that the Phoenix Mercury player will most likely be found guilty. William Pomeranz (Acting Director of Wilson’s Center Kennan Institute) elaborated of why the Russians feel that Griner is in the wrong.

“It will just be a very dry recitation of the facts. There is not going to be a Perry Mason moment. They let in a couple of people to watch, but I wouldn’t call it a public trial. I’m sure some state media will be allowed in just to get some initial photos of the proceedings, but I assure you that they won’t let western media in.” Pomeranz admitted that the best option would be for Brittney to plead guilty to the charges in hopes of getting a shorter sentence.
