“DISASTROUS” Brittney Griner pleads guilty to drug charges in Russia; Could potentially face 10 years in prison
Brittney Griner
With many hoping that US Government will take all necessary actions to bring back WNBA star Brittney Griner back to her homeland before the start of the trail, the reality is in-turn much different. After spending more than four months in Russia, Griner has pled guilty to the drug possession charges on the second day of her trail in Russia. The same could result in the 31-year-old facing 10 years in prison.
With tension rising between United States and Russia involving the attack over Ukraine, Brittney Griner had sent an open letter to Joe Biden’s administration. Wherein she requested them to take all actions to bring her back, as she feels that she could potentially be held in the country ‘forever’. Amid discussions from Washington going on, it seems like Brittney Griner has pled guilty.
Will Brittney Griner face 10 years in Prison?
On the same note, a senior Russian diplomat said earlier that no action could be taken by Moscow on Griner’s case until the trial was over, and her guilty plea could be an effort by her and her advisers to expedite the court proceedings. Speaking through an interpreter, Griner told the court that she had no intention of committing a crime and had acted unintentionally because she had packed for Moscow in a hurry.
“Griner added that she had committed this act through negligence, unintentionally,” Maria Blagovolina (Griner’s lawyers) told reporters outside the court near Moscow after the guilty plea as quoted by Firstpost.
“We of course hope for the leniency of the court,” Blagovolina said. “Considering all the circumstances of the case, taking into account the personality of our client, we believe that the admission of guilt should certainly be taken into account.”
That being said, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the US description of Griner as “wrongfully detained” and warned that “attempts by the American side to make noise in public absolutely don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”
Given that time seems to be against Brittney at this moment, what action and steps will be taken by Joe Biden, remains to be seen.
