“Good luck” Brittney Griner sends emotional message to wife Cherelle amid looming threat of 10-years imprisonment in Russia

“Good luck” Brittney Griner sends emotional message to wife Cherelle amid looming threat of 10-years imprisonment in Russia

Brittney Griner

For the first time since her arrest in Russia in February, Brittney Griner met with a member of the media on Tuesday. She said she had “no complaints” about her confinement and wished her wife success on the bar exam. Griner, who returned to court on Tuesday for a second hearing in her drug case, struck up a conversation with a news reporter from behind bars in the Moscow courthouse while holding up a collage of pictures of her family.

It’s unknown when the eight-time WNBA All-Star will be able to leave Russia after authorities said they seized vape canisters carrying cannabis oil in her luggage. She has been held there for months. The Phoenix Mercury player is presently on trial in Moscow and, if proven guilty, may get a 10-year prison term. Experts predict that Brittney will face an uphill struggle to be cleared in her criminal case, and they believe that the Russian government is using her as a diplomatic negotiating chip in the midst of their continuing invasion of Ukraine.

Brittney Griner and her last few months in Russia.

Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner has spent the previous seven seasons playing basketball in Russia, where she makes more than $1 million per season, which is more than four times her WNBA contract. Before the league took a two-week hiatus in the beginning of February for the FIBA World Cup qualification competitions, she recently competed for the Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg on January 29. She was found guilty of possessing cannabis oil vape cartridges in her luggage, and as a result, has been held in detention in Russia for more than 150 days.

The Phoenix Mercury centre accidentally carried the marijuana goods to Russia, according to Griner’s defence team, since she was packing quickly and forgot to take them out of her suitcase. Her attorneys have also claimed that Griner uses marijuana domestically for medical rather than recreational purposes, citing a medical marijuana prescription she obtained from an Arizona doctor as proof. The eight-time WNBA All-release Star’s has been reportedly a top priority for the Biden administration, which has also spoken with the Russian government in an effort to enable Griner’s return home.

Prior to Brittney Griner’s arrest, Cherelle added that she had only “sporadically” written to her and had not spoken on the phone with her. The conversation had been set for the couple to speak over the phone in June for their fourth anniversary, but owing to a “logistical error,” it had to be postponed. Griner gently conveys the information to Cherelle Griner (who has been studying to become a lawyer) in the audio of the discussion, adding that she is “simply waiting patiently” for a resolution for her issue. A few minutes before to the interview with the reporter, Brittney held out a picture of Cherelle. She also had a sweater on that said, “Black Lives Are Loved.”

According to some analysts, Brittney Griner’s release could depend on an unusual two-for-one trade between Paul Whelan and the renowned Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. The WNBA is in the middle of its 2022 season as Griner’s struggle continues halfway around the world. The athletes pledged to utilize all available means, including wearing Griner’s name and number on their jerseys at the All-Star Game, to pressure the Biden administration to take action.
