WNBA star Brittney Griner’s fans and supporters have found a way to put forth a strong protest against the unfortunate detention of the Phoenix Mercury player. Recently, the Russian court rejected Brittney’s appeal for her nine-year sentence as she was caught carrying cannabis oil cartridges, considered illegal in the country. She is even being treated unlawfully, which is hampering her physical as well as her mental condition.

An advocacy group named DC Marijuana Justice and her supporters planned to gather at the Russian Embassy in Washington and smoke pot to light up the protest. The group’s co-founder and event organizer Adam Eidinger quoted in his statement, “We want Brittany released and free of the sham charges that Putin imposed on her as his failed invasion of Ukraine backfired and he elevated Russia to the status of most dangerous rogue nation on the planet.” He also wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to look at what freedom looks like in the United States.

Adam added, “Cannabis is a medical and personal choice for adults in America, no matter the party, gender, religion or race. Putin hates freedom, but that’s exactly what we want to give him, a freedom toke.”  He also stated that the protesters would bring in flags with green pot leaves on it and a 50-foot inflatable joint with a message about Griner. They also planned to throw marijuana leaves onto the Russian Embassy grounds.

The WNBA star is set to enter a penal colony with a strict rule of following isolation, grueling labor, and psychological torture to fulfill a nine-year sentence handed down to her. Many camps in Russia follow human rights violations like an infamous Russian gulag. Griner being a gay black woman, could add to her misery in the colony, known for giving humans the worst treatments.

In the colonies, prisoners were kept in overcrowded conditions, faced abuse by guards and inmates, and had limited access to health care, food shortages, and inadequate sanitation. The prisoners also faced sexual abuse, and the torture sometimes got so out of hand that the prisoners died or even committed suicide.

There are reports that Griner might be sent to a repurposed Soviet gulag. In this brutal penal colony, prisoners were used for farming, mining or logging in sparsely populated areas of the country or made to work in sweatshop conditions.
