WNBA and Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is serving prison time in Russia. She was detained for illegally carrying marijuana in her handbag. Brittney has shared her struggles in her book ‘In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court,’ which came out in 2014. Here she narrates an incident when her father refused to accept her sexual preference, and she used to rush to her mom, afraid of her father.
Brittney Griner shared about her father and his way of life. She said, as per her book, “My dad had a very strict upbringing, and that’s how he raised us, as if danger lurked around every corner.” She also said that her mother, Sandra used to cover for her when she got older.
So, to avoid her father’s ‘whooping, Brittney’s mother made excuses for her. She added, “I guess it was just easy to disappoint my mother than my father, because I was such a daddy’s girl, from the moment I could walk.” Things worsened when her father discovered that Brittney had different sexual preferences. But Brittney Griner’s father understood over time and reconciled with his daughter.
The Love-Hate relation between WNBA Star and her Dad
Brittney had a tough upbringing while growing up around her strict father, who always wanted his daughter within sight. It was hard for Griner to have an everyday life as a kid due to his father’s tendency to be tough on his children.
However, BG was still daddy’s girl, and much credit for that went to her mother, Sandra Griner, who always protected her. Griner was never allowed to have sleepovers or go to parties, as her father never let her. Brittney also stated that it was hard for her dad to make peace with the idea of her playing with other kids in the vicinity.
