“$1 Million temptation” Brittney Griner’s close friend could not resist lucrative Russian offer compared to ‘LOW’ American salaries

“$1 Million temptation” Brittney Griner’s close friend could not resist lucrative Russian offer compared to ‘LOW’ American salaries

Brittney Griner and Alex Bentley

Brittney Griner claimed to have earned $1 million in US dollars playing basketball every winter in Russia, more than four times what she earned back home. Unfortunately, many players may decide to leave the country in quest of greater financial opportunities and Alex Bentley, a close friend of Griner’s, did the same thing.

The imprisonment of Brittney Griner has gradually risen to the top of the political agenda. Joe Biden, the president, has made it a priority to quickly bring the WNBA star back. Notably, one of the WNBA’s top talents has received active support from the league. Nevertheless, a Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison, and people expressed their displeasure with the punishment since they believed it to be excessively critical. Ironically, if the American market had valued Griner’s talent more highly, the events that resulted in her detention may have been completely averted. The renowned athlete was merely in Russia to increase her earnings and some American athletes are still competing abroad despite the tensions.

Why was Brittney Griner in Russia in the first place?

Brittney Griner, a 6 feet 9 inch centre acquired by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the 2013 WNBA Draft out of Baylor University, has been a crucial member of the team ever since. The 31-year-old is known as one of the finest defensive and offensive players in the league and was chosen in 2021 as one of the top 25 players in Women’s National Basketball Association history. She has won two Olympic gold medals, a WNBA title, the Player of the Year Award, and the national collegiate championship since starting her professional career in 2013 with the US women’s national basketball team.

Brittney Griner has been held by the Russian government since her arrest on February 17 at the Sheremetyevo International Airport on the grounds that she was in possession of vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which are prohibited in that country. Griner competes overseas during the WNBA summer to drastically increase her earnings and improve her level of ability, like many other female basketball players. In order to join the UMMC Ekaterinburg squad in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League, Griner was interrupted. Griner claimed to have an emergency prescription for cannabis oil and to have packed despite not knowing how it got into her luggage.

Alex Bentley, Griner’s best friend, to continue playing in Russia

The WNBA stars has earned millions thanks to the international market—nearly four times their American wage. Now, one of Brittney Griner’s close pals, Alex Bentley, will continue to receive attention in Russia despite her disputed arrest. Bentley has continued to stand by her friend despite what could appear to be a rebellious action. She hasn’t had a WNBA contract in the last two seasons, thus her primary source of revenue is from playing in Russia. Bentley’s dual citizenship is the only thing keeping her content and she wants Griner to be released from prison despite the fact that she plays for the Russian team. Female athletes may earn anywhere from a few hundred thousand to over a million dollars when competing abroad.

She confessed to drug charges after being held for several months, and eventually received a prison term. The possibility that Brittney Griner may eventually go back home is probable. Russian authorities recently disclosed that negotiations are still ongoing between their country and the US on a prisoner swap in which Griner may be sent back to the US. The WNBA’s pay gap with the NBA has recently drawn the utmost attention from several athletes. Griner and other WNBA players go to Russia to boost their incomes, like many athletes who choose to play in leagues located distant from their homes, since the country is luring players in with its huge payrolls.
