Brittney Griner is still not back on American soil and will probably won’t be back for another two and half weeks. As the Russian government has extended her detention till 2nd July 2022. She has been wrongfully detained in Russia for more than 110 days and the counting continues. In February, Brittney Griner was detained at the Moscow airport as the Russian officials say they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. She now is facing drug smuggling charges which can get her a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment in Russia. Her pre-trial was also postponed and now many believe she is a “political prisoner” held by Russia who will be used for some benefits or a good exchange with the United States of America. As they want to be on the advantageous side during their war against Ukraine.
Many stars from NBA and WNBA stepped up for her release in recent weeks. Even the officials promised that they’ll try to get her back as soon as possible and it’s their top priority. But now it all looks washed as a Russian court extended her detention to 2nd July 2022, as the investigators requested the extension. The ruling was handed down on Tuesday according to TASS a Russian state media outlet. They also confirmed that the Khimki district court of the Moscow region has extended her detention for the third time.
A top Russian diplomat has also said that there will be no detainee swap for Brittney Griner until a court investigation into her case is completed. The Biden Administration earlier offered to exchange arms trader Viktor Bout for her who’s been locked up in the United States of America since 2012 but there are no talks out in the public yet regarding the deal between the two countries. Many think the Russian government is waiting to listen out to some more proposals.

Will Brittney Griner be back anytime soon?
There are still no answers for the release of wrongfully detained Brittney Griner. She’s trapped as a political or war prisoner in Russia and surely doesn’t deserve any part of it. She is a highly decorated basketball player who has won two gold medals and is very talented and holds many records. But is still helpless behind the bars in Moscow. Players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Carmelo Anthony, the whole Boston Celtics team and even the NBA commissioner Adam Silver including many others have stood up for her release which is still uncertain. Everyone around is now just hoping for her safe and soon release.
