WNBA star Brittney Griner was the number 1 pick for Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 draft. The league has been quite welcoming for the star player since then. However, she had a very traumatizing childhood and even worse college days. Children teased her around her in school and college. It became so unbearable that she used to get home and cry alone in her bedroom.
Griner came out to her parents stating that she is a lesbian. Her mother greeted the news and showed support to her. However, her father, Ray, refused to accept her. He said, “I don’t care. This is not acceptable.” He declared that he wasn’t “raising any lesbian.” It was a tough road ahead for Brittney then without the support of her father.
Brittney Griner moved out during her senior year and started living with an assistant coach of her school team. Fortunately, her father finally came around and accepted his daughter for who she is. Then the two mended things with each other and stayed in regular contact. Griner’s best friend from high school, Janell Roy, now a police officer in Austin said that, “I don’t think Ray could live with himself if he lost his daughter.”
How long has been Brittney Griner locked up in Russia?
Griner was in Russia to play during the WNBA’s offseason because she gets paid much more overseas. On February 17, Griner was detained at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Khimki as she was accused of carrying vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which is a crime in Russia. Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for carrying less than 1 gram of THC.

It has been nearly seven months since she locks up there. Apparently, USA President Joe Biden has been making attempts to bring Britney back home. On 29th July, the US government proposed to exchange convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout in return for Brittney Griner. Many people believe that only diplomatic ways can help Brittney get back home. It is almost around 200 days since her arrest in Russia.
