“She is convinced.. America won’t take her home” Brittney Griner’s haunting 9-year spell in Russia could seen turn into the worst nightmare

“She is convinced.. America won’t take her home” Brittney Griner’s haunting 9-year spell in Russia could seen turn into the worst nightmare

Brittney Griner with her lawyers

The United States believes that the arrest and prosecution of the WNBA star Brittney Griner was politically biased. Griner’s concern over her chances of being given freedom has escalated. Her lawyer has said that as the United States attempts to gain her freedom, she is concerned that she might not be released.

Due to Brittney Griner’s imprisonment in Russia since February 2022, the matter concerning her is far from resolved. The centre from the Phoenix Mercury landed in Moscow to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Premier League.

The Russian court has already set a deadline for Griner to file an appeal over her nine-year sentence, and she will appear in court once more on October 25. According to her lawyer, Griner is now getting more and more anxious about the possibility of being released.

Brittney Griner’s situation explained

Brittney Griner has not been released since being detained by Russian officials at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February. The seven-time all-star and two-time WNBA defensive player of the year was detained by Russian Customs while in possession of vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil. After being found guilty of narcotics offences in Russia, Griner was given a nine-year term in August. On August 15, Griner’s legal team filed an appeal against her nine-year sentence. They still believe that Griner’s sentencing is severe, even though she might have faced up to 10 years in jail. The defense attorney claimed that other convicted perpetrators in comparable circumstances across Russia received lower sentences, and some even received parole.

On August 11, officials of the Russian government revealed that they and the American administration were in talks over a prospective prisoner swap. This could have made it possible for Brittney Griner to reconnect with her family after her imprisonment. The Biden administration believes that she is being held outside the law because Viktor Bout, a well-known Russian arms dealer who was given a 25-year sentence in 2011, has reportedly been mentioned in connection with a prospective prisoner swap. The Phoenix Mercury’s Griner, a 31-year-old athlete, has won two Olympic gold medals. She has also participated in WNBA offseason matches played by UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia since 2014.

Griner and her fear of not returning home

Alexandr D. Boykov, the attorney for Brittney Griner, has disclosed that her client does not believe she will soon be freed from a Russian jail. The WNBA standout received a nine-year prison term in Russia for drug offences and her optimism in going back to the US seemed to be decreasing daily. He said: “She is not yet absolutely convinced that America will be able to take her home. She is very worried about what the price of that will be, and she is afraid that she will have to serve the whole sentence here in Russia.”

Boykov also said that she is currently being held in a penal colony outside of Moscow where she is permitted to walk in the courtyard for an hour and shares a cell with two other inmates where she sleeps on a bed that is long enough to fit her height.

The Brittney Griner case was given by the Biden administration to the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs in May. This State Department division is in charge of negotiating the release of Americans who are being held hostage as well as anyone else who is thought to be wrongfully detained abroad. The athletic community has not given up on Brittney Griner, as seen by the numerous athletes and celebrities who voiced their love and support for her safe release. The basketball world has advocated against releasing Griner and criticised the government. However, the Biden administration has assured everyone that they are making every effort to reduce the problem.
