Brittney Griner's wife Cherelle speaks to President Joe Biden
Brittney Griner, a player of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury had been in Russian arrested on February 17, 2022, after she was caught carrying cannabis oil into the Sheremetyevo International Airport. Based on the current situation of the country and the emerging war going on between them and Ukraine, Griner’s safety was a big concern. For the initial part of her arrest, she had no contact with her native country.
The WNBA star was able to contact her family and representatives in the United States of America with the help of her local Russian lawyer. She was kept under custody for weeks before the court announced the extension of her trial date. The Russian authorities also claimed that the American representatives did not make an attempt to reach out to her despite being granted permission under special conditions.
Brittney Griner gets a 30-day extension before the trial begins
After nearly three months of being held up in detention, the court had announced that there will be a short 30-day extension. They stated that the extension will start on May 19th, 2022 onwards with hopes of potentially getting into the trial phase. This showed some hope for the former Olympian as she was at risk of being held for at least 10-years.
Many were obviously concerned over Brittney Griner’s safety after stories of people being ill-treated by the Russian federal officials had been circulated during this period. Her lawyer Alexander Boikov spoke to the press saying that such an extension would usually mean that the case is being considered to be taken under trial. This means that the baller could be released by the end of this year or at least within the near future.
Brittney Griner’s wife Cherelle calls out President Joe Biden to help get justice
After the recent updates on the case, Brittney Griner’s wife, Cherelle had opened up about her partner’s arrest to the media. She spoke to Robin Roberts of the show, “Good Morning America,” requesting President Joe Biden to help get the release finalized. “I just keep hearing that he has the power, she’s a political pawn. So, if they’re holding her because they want you (President) to do something, then I want you to do it.” she said.
According to the newest reports, the President is open to releasing a convicted Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout in exchange for the Phoenix Mercury player. Cherelle also revealed that she was contacted by the Secretary of State Antony Blinken as he said Brittney’s safe return was the topmost priority of theirs. The country continues to fight for her release as more news is underway.
