“I’ve spent the last eight months riding waves of grief” Brittney Griner’s wife expresses her agony whilst awaiting her release from Russia
Brittney Griner, Cherelle Griner
Following a Russian court’s rejection of her request for a reduced prison sentence last month, Brittney Griner‘s wife Cherelle Griner is growing increasingly concerned for the NBA player’s mental well-being. Since BG was imprisoned in Russia early this year, her wife has been in a large amount of pain and distress.
Brittney Griner’s predicament is far from resolved because she has been detained in Russia since February 2022. Millions of people including basketball enthusiasts and others are now familiar with Griner around the entire world. Because the WNBA star is being held in one of Russia’s most appalling prisons, the administration is intensifying its efforts to have her returned as soon as possible. Cherelle, her wife recently addressed the subject and expressed her current discomfort.
Cherelle Griner spoke compellingly about Brittney Griner’s condition in the Russian prison at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, touching everyone in attendance. She said: “I’ve spent the last eight months riding waves of grief and, to be honest, just total disbelief.” She continued by saying: “I can’t believe that I’m standing in front of you guys today, living without my favorite person, my greatest love, biggest support, and just sanctuary.” Griner and her lawyers set out an appeal to the Russian court, but in the last week of October, it was denied.
Brittney Griner and her frail situation in Russia
Brittney Griner has not been released since being detained by Russian officials at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February. The seven-time all-star and two-time WNBA defensive player of the year was arrested by Russian Customs while carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. After being found guilty of narcotics offenses in Russia, Griner was given a nine-year term in August.
On August 15, Griner’s legal team filed an appeal against her nine-year sentence. They still believe that her penalty was excessive even though she might have received a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The defense attorneys claimed that other individuals convicted in like circumstances across Russia had received lower sentences and some had even been granted parole.
On August 11, representatives of the Russian government revealed that talks about exchanging detainees with the American administration had already started. The Phoenix Mercury’s Griner, a 31-year-old athlete has won two Olympic gold medals. She has also participated in WNBA offseason matches played by UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia since 2014.
Cherelle Griner with the words of hope
Later in the award ceremony, Cherelle also added: “BG is a strong human being, but she is 100% not okay. I believe from the bottom of my heart that while I can’t physically bring her back, words can make a difference.” Cherelle has been fighting through the structure to make certain that her partner is not forgotten and has discussed bringing Griner home with politicians, especially President Joe Biden. Brittney virtually attended an appeal session last week and asked the judge to reconsider her sentence while also admitting to her mistake but nothing came of it.
Cherelle Griner is currently clinging to the hope that the US government can arrange a prisoner swap to bring her wife home. Since the Biden administration stated in August that it made a proposal to swap Brittney and another Marine for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is currently serving a 25-year sentence in the US but negotiations between the US and Russia appear to have derailed. Legal professionals and hostage negotiators have said that Russia is too preoccupied with causing chaos to engage in negotiations.
