Caitlin Clark, the Iowa Hawkeyes guard who lit up the NCAA women’s basketball tournament with her record-breaking scoring, has finally opened up about the gesture that LSU’s Angel Reese made towards her in the title game.
Reese, who led the Tigers to their first-ever national championship with 15 points and 13 rebounds, waved one hand in front of her face and pointed to her ring finger while looking at Clark in the closing moments of LSU’s 102-85 win on Sunday. The gesture, which was popularized by wrestler John Cena as “You Can’t See Me”, was seen by many as a sign of disrespect and arrogance, and sparked a backlash on social media. Some people even added a racial angle to this whole ordeal.
Reese later said that she was reacting to Clark’s previous “disrespect” towards her teammate Alexis Morris and the South Carolina Gamecocks, whom Iowa had defeated in the Final Four. Clark had used the same gesture when she waved off South Carolina’s Raven Johnson in the first quarter of that game. Clark, who scored 191 points in the tournament, the most ever by any man or woman in a single NCAA tournament, said on Tuesday that she was not offended by Reese’s gesture and did not think it had anything to do with race.
“I don’t think Angel should be criticized at all,” Clark said in an interview with ESPN. “I’m just one that competes, and she competed. I think everybody knew there was going to be a little trash talk in the entire tournament. It’s not just me and Angel.”
Clark also complimented Reese for her performance and said she respected her as a player. “She’s a great player. She had an amazing tournament. She deserved to be the MVP,” Clark said. “I have nothing but respect for her and LSU. They played a great game and they deserved to win.”
Clark added that she was proud of what she and her team accomplished this season and that she was looking forward to next season. “I’m proud of what we accomplished this season. We made history for our program and our state,” Clark said. “I’m looking forward to next season and hopefully getting another chance to play for a national title.”
