Caleb Martin has been a revelation for the Miami Heat this postseason, all thanks to J. Cole. The undrafted forward has played a vital role in helping the Heat take a 3-0 lead over the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals.

But Martin’s path to the NBA was anything but smooth. He played college basketball at NC State and Nevada, where he starred alongside his twin brother Cody. He went undrafted in 2019, while the Charlotte Hornets picked Cody in the second round. Caleb signed with the Hornets as well but spent most of his time in the G League.

Martin’s luck changed when he received a phone call from an unexpected source: rapper J. Cole. He called Caron Butler, an assistant coach for the Miami Heat, and vouched for Martin. He told Butler that Martin was a talented and hard-working player who deserved a chance in the NBA. “[J. Cole] went straight to his contacts & hit up Caron [Butler]. They put me in position to come up here, get a scrimmage… I just came in, played well & the rest was history.” said Martin.

Butler arranged for Martin to have a tryout with the Heat, where he impressed them with his skills and energy. The Heat signed him to a two-way contract worth $20 million contract as a full-time player with the Heat for the next three years.

Martin’s role increased in the Playoffs as he became a regular part of the Heat’s rotation. He has played in all 14 games so far in the playoffs this season, averaging 12.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
