“Just want her back” Celtics player honor WNBA star Brittney Griner as she remains detained in Russia

Brittney Griner and the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics stand strong in support of Brittney Griner and want her back in the United States of America. As she is wrongfully detained in Russia for more than 100 days. In February, Brittney Griner was detained at the Moscow airport as the Russian officials say they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. She now is facing drug smuggling charges which can get her a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment in Russia. Her pre-trial was also postponed and now many believe she is a “political prisoner” held by Russia who will be used for some benefits or a good exchange with the United States of America. The WNBA has made several efforts to spread awareness about it and get their star center back and now even NBA players have joined hands with them and want their colleague back.

The Boston Celtics took the most efforts they can and peacefully showcased their support for the release and return of wrongfully detained Brittney Griner. The whole Celtics team wore black t-shirts with orange print on it that reads: “WE ARE BG” on the front and had a QR code on the back for a petition to free Brittney Griner with #WEAREBG. Many players even addressed the situation and BG being wrongfully detained in Russia during their media interviews. They used their platform in the most correct way possible as with the ongoing NBA Finals they knew that they’ll get the most coverage possible and can send a message across to drive in some support.

Grant Williams told the media how it all got possible and how the shirts play an important role. As he quoted: “The shirts were super important not only showing our support for our sister that is detained over in Russia, Brittney Griner, we just wanted to show that togetherness and love that we have throughout not only the NBA but the WNBA. She’s been a vital part of the WNBA over years past, college, and in the amount of impact, she’s had on young female athletes, USA and overseas. We hope to have her back in the U.S. and reunited with her family and do what she loves and bring that love and tenacity she always plays with on the court.”

Grant Williams is also the vice president of the National Basketball Players Association and he also mentioned that the shirts were a collaborative effort from NBPA and WNBPA to show support for BG and the whole Boston Celtics team stepped in to show out their support for the WNBA star. He also credited the WNBPA as he said: “They sent them overnight to get them here for today. They did a phenomenal job, and want to credit them to make that process happen. We just wanted to do that as a team. It was one of those things where no one questioned it. Everyone said, ‘Let’s do it.’ Everyone put the shirt on immediately when we got them, fresh off the box. They were ironed and good to go. So we wanted to show that love and support.”

Jayson Tatum the Boston Celtics franchise player though talked about Brittney Griner and appreciated her for her personality as he said: “Being over there with the Olympics, obviously it was during COVID and so we couldn’t really go out and see other events and things like that. So after the games, after practice, we would be in the hospitality room, men and women. We would be in there, playing cards, karaoke, things like that, video games. Great person to be around. She just lightens the entire room with her personality. So it’s extremely tough seeing what she’s going through. I know everybody sees and feels that, and obviously we’re all together in support trying to bring her back to her family and things like that. Yeah, wearing those shirts today in support of her.”

The Boston Celtics did all they can and will continue to as even NBA commissioner Adam Silver is supporting them. Everyone around now is hoping for the best and quickest release of Brittney Griner who’s wrongfully detained in Russia as it has been like 107 plus days and there’s a limit to everything and anything. Many also believe she is a war prisoner as Russia will surely try to benefit from her release.
