“Never a goal of mine” – NBA champion, MVP LeBron James COMPLETELY DEGRADES one title of the league

LeBron James

LeBron James is one of the best players to ever stepped foot on the NBA hardwood. So far in the 20 seasons he has spent in the league, he has achieved everything and has even made it to the GOAT debate. And, he still continues to ball out. But unfortunately, LeBron James is yet to get his hands on the slam dunk trophy. That’s not because of his failure to win it. Instead, he just never participated in the competition.

LeBron James has achieved greatness while balling out. He is a 4× NBA champion, 4× League MVP, 4× FMVP, has 19 All-Star appearances, has several NBA team selections, and has other multiple records for leading various stats of the game. He also is a part of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. The resume he has is just impossible to match. But one thing LeBron James is missing is being a Slam Dunk Champion.

But LeBron James cares the least about it. Honestly, during the early years of his career, he was one of the best dunkers in the league. He was super athletic and had a godly bounce. Now he’s 38 years old and still, the league fears him when he goes up in the air to flush the ball. So it’s fair to say he would have easily bagged the award back in the day.

But LeBron James never wanted to do so. As he recently admitted winning the slam dunk championship was never a goal of his. While doing so the 4×MVP quoted: “I don’t think it was something I wanted to accomplish in my career; it’s not a goal of mine and it never was coming into the NBA to be a part of the Dunk Contest, you know? Making the NBA All-Star Team was, being the league MVP, winning Defensive Player of the Year, winning NBA Championships…? Those were some goals of mine. The NBA Dunk Contest was NEVER a goal of mine so, it wasn’t something that I had too much passion for.”

Did LeBron James ruin the Slam Dunk contest?

LeBron James isn’t really responsible for the Dunk contest being ruined in the past years, except for the Mac McClung run. But Stephen A. Smith believes he is personally responsible for ruining the contest, especially from the participation point of view. As Smith called him out after the 2023 Dunk Contest on ESPN and quoted: “There is one blemish on LeBron James’ career and that is that he has ruined the slam dunk contest. He is personally responsible.”

Further, Stephen A. Smith brought some of the Slam Dunk Champions to the conversation while accusing LeBron James to ruin the contest even if the audience wanted him in it. He added: “Connie Hawkins, David Thompson, Doctor J, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan all competed in the dunk contest… All of these guys competed, but LeBron James, who loves slam dunking has never participated… Since he ignored it, we have seen the dissipation of stars’ participation in the slam dunk. LeBron is the one responsible for that and it’s because of him that others thought it was okay to follow.”

LeBron James would have bagged the award but maybe it was the pressure and expectations of the fans which stopped him to do so. But now, unfortunately, that’s how it will be and we’ll have to keep enjoying his in-game dunks and highlights he has created gifting posters to his opponents over the years.
