The New York Knicks aren’t close to becoming title contenders, according to Charles Barkley. Even though they have a strong core of players in Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson, and Mitchell Robinson who have performed admirably in the East this season.

Unfortunately, not everyone believes the Knicks are a dominant force. For instance, Charles Barkley of TNT recently made fun of the Knicks and their supporters when Kenny Smith said they were just missing one piece of being exceptional.

Kenny said, “[The Knicks] are probably another piece away from trying to be an elite team.” Chuck hilariously replied, “LeBron, Giannis, KD. … Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bird? The Knicks are a good little solid team, they play hard and that’s it. They’re not even close Kenny…”

The Knicks go through periods where they appear to be virtually unbeatable, but these periods are invariably followed by other periods when their defense is subpar, their effort is subpar, and their decisions are awful. They have struggled with inconsistency for years, and the front office hasn’t reacted effectively.

Tom Thibodeau calls out refs after Knicks’ loss

On Monday, the Knicks lost at home, and Tom Thibodeau wasn’t happy with the officials’ performance. Thibodeau was obviously not happy with the 41 free throw attempts made by the Raptors. In his team’s 123-121 overtime loss at the Garden. Though he said he had to watch the film first before making any further comments.

“It was hard to tell what a foul was,” the Knicks coach said, “I don’t really care if a game’s called tight or if it’s called loose. I just want consistency, That’s what I look for. And so, it was physical. It was. There was a lot going on. And so again, I wanna watch to make sure I saw what I thought I saw.”

One particular call, a foul on Jalen Brunson early in overtime with the Knicks trailing by one basket, seemed to annoy Thibodeau. He appeared to have been shoved into Fred VanVleet, who was leading with his elbow. VanVleet made two free throws and the challenge was not overruled.

“I think it was Scottie [Barnes] that bumped me into him,” Brunson said. “They felt otherwise, and that was that.” Asked directly about his take on the play, Thibodeau said: “Write what you see.”
