“Angola is in trouble!” Charles Barkley issued a warning before 1992 Dream Team’s first game
Charles Barkley could have possibly been one of the only outspoken and gutsy players in the NBA. During his time, outrageous stories about him surfaced about his temper and daring nature. As dominant as he was in speech and physicality, he was just the same on the court playing during one of the most legendary eras of the NBA.
Chuck played notably played for the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers where he became a sensation on both ends of the court. The former MVP made several trips to the playoffs carrying his entire team on his shoulders only to be disqualified within arms reach of a title. He retired with every award except for the NBA title and to date people troll him about it even though he claims to have made peace with it.
The 1992 Olympic Dream Team had no tough matchup
The Dream Team of 1992 was arguably the greatest basketball team put together in the history of the sport. As many of you may not have known, FIBA had banned professionals athletes from participating in national teams. However, this rule was lifted prior to the 1992 Olympics this allowing the existence of the Dream Team.
The team’s roster had Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, John Stockton, and of course, Charles Barkley. The team was a perfect balance between offense and defense with the prime examples of each aspect. This team also had the highest scoring averages in the history of the Olympics of 117.3 points. This record has not been broken till date.
Charles Barkley warns Olympics opponents ahead of the game
Team USA opened with a bang and dominated their opponents, literally. Angola was held to 48 points against 116 by the end of the game which had the entire world shocked. At one point, USA went on a 46-1 scoring run, embarrassing the smaller team during this matchup.
It seemed almost unfair that the African opponents. Team USA had a significant height advantage with their point guard, Johnson standing at 6″9 feet and and their at 6″0 feet. Charles Barkley warned Angola during the press conference saying, “I don’t know anything about Angola, but Angola’s in trouble.” Despite having as much talent on their team to pro e they are the greatest among all countries, Chuck’s words only showed the world that USA were bullies.
